Position Overview
At the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG), we are at the forefront of enhancing our digital infrastructure. Our mission encompasses the homes we inhabit, the efforts of local councils, and the communities we serve, placing our work at the heart of national priorities. With ambitious goals set for this year, we invite you to consider joining us during this pivotal moment.
Our organization comprises over 3,500 dedicated professionals across 20 locations in the UK. Our objective is to deliver exceptional digital services for our personnel, utilizing a blend of internal and external teams to provide state-of-the-art cloud solutions. This responsibility entails a significant demand for the adoption of innovative technologies, systems, and applications that necessitate thorough security assessments to ensure a secure operational environment, supported by centralized security solutions such as SIEM, vulnerability assessment tools, and security validation mechanisms.
In an era where security is paramount for delivering services to our staff and citizens, our department is devoted to fulfilling the objectives outlined in the Government Cyber Security Strategy. Over the past year, we have embarked on an extensive cyber security enhancement initiative. This is an exhilarating time to become part of our Cyber team, as we have made substantial investments and are actively seeking to expand our capabilities.
We are currently in search of a Lead SOC Analyst to join our ranks. In this role, you will oversee the management of our outsourced Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) and lead a small team of internal SOC analysts. Your collaboration with cross-functional teams will be vital in detecting, analyzing, and responding to potential security incidents, thereby safeguarding our data and information systems. Your cybersecurity expertise, leadership abilities, and profound technical knowledge will be crucial in identifying emerging threats, supporting the implementation of effective security measures, and upholding the highest standards of cybersecurity within our organization.
We strongly encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented groups to apply, as we strive to enhance our representation of the communities we serve.
Key Responsibilities
As a Lead Cyber Security SOC Analyst, your responsibilities will include:
- Leading a small team of SOC analysts, providing mentorship, training, and support to ensure optimal performance and productivity.
- Overseeing the daily operations of the internal SOC, including incident monitoring, analysis, and response.
- Developing and implementing SOC procedures, guidelines, and best practices to facilitate efficient incident response.
- Collaborating with internal stakeholders, such as system and service owners, to enhance protective monitoring and controls.
- Staying informed about the latest cybersecurity threats, vulnerabilities, and industry trends, while proactively recommending and supporting the implementation of protective measures.
- Leading incident response efforts, including major incidents, encompassing containment, investigation, analysis, and reporting of security incidents.
- Conducting post-incident analyses and proposing enhancements to improve the department's overall security posture.
- Acting as the contract manager and/or service owner for our outsourced CSOC service and SIEM tool, with potential leadership for additional cybersecurity tools and services.
- Collaborating with our CSOC service management supplier to ensure timely resolution of security issues and develop alerting and playbooks for services.
- Working with IT engineers to ensure proper configurations and management of security monitoring tools and technologies.
- Preparing and presenting reports on SOC operations, incident response activities, and security posture to key stakeholders.
- Collaborating with cybersecurity teams within the broader organization to ensure a coordinated approach to cybersecurity tooling, risk management, information sharing, and policies.
Candidate Profile
To be considered for this role, you should possess:
- Extensive experience as a SOC analyst within an enterprise environment.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure, managing multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the capacity to motivate and guide a team of analysts.
- Proven experience in a leadership role, ideally as a senior SOC analyst or SOC team lead.
- In-depth knowledge of cybersecurity principles, frameworks, and best practices.
- Comprehensive understanding of security technologies, including Microsoft Sentinel, Cisco, Cisco Meraki, Zscaler, Microsoft Defender, endpoint protection, advanced KQL, automation, playbooks, and workbooks.
- Hands-on experience with incident response and forensic tools, techniques, and methodologies.
- Familiarity with security principles and technologies for cloud-hosted services such as AWS, Azure, SaaS, and Azure Sentinel.
- Ability to analyze and interpret security logs, event data, and alerts to identify potential threats.
- Relevant professional certifications, such as OSPF, CEH, SANS GCIH, or equivalent.
