Position Overview

The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust is looking to recruit Consultants specializing in Emergency and General Medicine. This role involves working within a dynamic team dedicated to providing high-quality care in a fast-paced environment.

The successful candidates will integrate into a team of 10 physicians, managing a 70-bed emergency medical unit, a 39-bed general medical ward, and an Ambulatory Care Unit. A medical Consultant will be available on call daily until 5 PM.

Appointees will play a crucial role in enhancing the emergency medical services and will be expected to contribute to service improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

The Consultants will primarily focus on direct clinical care and professional activities within the Emergency Medical Unit. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading multidisciplinary teams in the management of patients with acute medical conditions.
  • Conducting ward rounds and overseeing patient management.
  • Performing assessments and practical procedures as necessary.
  • Providing education and training to junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary meetings and governance activities.
  • Engaging in the administration and management of the service.
  • Collaborating with other healthcare professionals within and outside the organization.

Additionally, the successful candidates will be involved in delivering the Ambulatory Care Service through a designated Consultant model.

For those with specific specialty interests, there may be opportunities to incorporate these into the job plan, subject to service needs and discussions with the Clinical Director.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification.
  • Full registration with the GMC and a valid license to practice.
  • Eligibility for the GMC Specialist Register in Acute or General Medicine or nearing completion of a UK training program.
  • Broad training and experience in acute and general medicine.
  • Experience in an Acute Medical Unit.
  • Ability to independently manage acute medical emergencies.
  • Experience in a multicultural healthcare setting.

Desirable:

  • Previous consultant-level experience in an Acute Medical Unit or Ambulatory Care.
  • Subspecialty interests.

Clinical Governance and Teaching

Evidence of participation in clinical audits and a solid understanding of clinical governance principles is essential. A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and postgraduate students is also required.

Management Skills

Demonstrated organizational skills and experience in NHS management tasks are essential. Attendance at relevant management courses is desirable.

Personal Attributes

Successful candidates will exhibit strong leadership qualities, organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively under pressure. A collaborative approach to working with multidisciplinary teams and a commitment to patient-centered care are essential.
