Job Title: Principal Engineer – Metrology Specialist

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer – Metrology Specialist to join our team at BAE Systems. As a key member of our Metrology team, you will be responsible for performing and supervising high-level calibration and repair of Mechanical test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform and supervise high-level calibration and repair of TMDE, including resource management and calibration workload signoff.
  • Develop and maintain calibration procedures and measurement uncertainty budgets.
  • Participate in UKAS (ISO audits and achieve UKAS signatory status.
  • Deliver on-the-job training and experiential learning to apprentices and lesser-experienced team members.
  • Communicate effectively with technical stakeholders, including consultation on new measurement technologies.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience in a precision Mechanical metrology laboratory environment.
  • Understanding of quality systems and standards (ISO 17025 / ISO 9001).
  • Relevant academic qualification (STEM Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent).

Desirable Skills:

  • Existing UKAS signatory status for Mechanical Calibrations (Pressure, Mass, Torque, Force).
  • Experience in creating measurement uncertainty budgets to ISO 17025 level.
  • Experience in using automation software (Fluke Metcal, Met/Track, Met/Teams, Labview).

About the Team:

The Metrology team at BAE Systems is responsible for supporting 30,000 pieces of equipment per year, ranging from traditional analogue equipment to state-of-the-art digital systems. We focus on the calibration of TMDE capable of making pressure, mass, torque, and force measurements. Our team works in a dedicated laboratory as well as on-site around the Barrow Submarines Site.
