The General Theatre Anaesthesia team comprises a diverse group of professionals, including 17 General Anaesthetists, 5 Non-consultant grades, 3 physician associates, and 9 ICU Anaesthetists. The Trust is committed to providing specialized services in Tertiary Cardiac, Haematology, and Cystic Fibrosis for the local population.

The General Anaesthesia team is responsible for delivering anaesthetic care across various surgical disciplines, including General, Breast, and Colorectal Surgery, Upper GI surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma, ENT, Dental, Ophthalmic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Gynaecology, and Maternity Services. Additionally, the department operates an Acute Pain Service, a Chronic Pain/Pain Management Clinic, and a Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing service. Our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programmes are well-established in several surgical specialties, and both the Acute Pain Service and the Paediatric Service have garnered national recognition for their exceptional standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

This is a permanent position for a Consultant in General Anaesthesia. We welcome applicants with specific interests, and those with a focus on management or education will receive support. The role includes 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) for additional responsibilities and revalidation.

We encourage candidates with the requisite qualifications to pursue further clinical or academic interests as part of their job plan, supported by an additional SPA.

As a General Anaesthetist, the successful candidate will participate in the general on-call rota, covering non-cardiac emergency surgeries and supporting maternity services.

About Our Organization

The contract allows ample time for Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD), teaching, audits, and clinical governance activities. While there is flexibility in how and where these activities are conducted, it is essential to allocate time within the working week to demonstrate engagement in these activities on-site. The Clinical Director will require evidence of participation in these initiatives.

The total number of programmed activities is 10, with the possibility of additional Programmed Activities (PAs) to accommodate elective and emergency workloads upon discussion. Alternatively, the basic programmed activities may be reviewed.
