Chief Legal Officer / General Counsel

Citizen Zoo is seeking a seasoned legal professional to join its Board of Directors as Chief Legal Officer (CLO) or General Counsel (GC). As a not-for-profit community interest company (CIC) focused on nature restoration and urban rewilding, we require a legal expert to provide strategic guidance and oversight.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in corporate governance, legal compliance, risk management, and advising boards or senior leadership on complex legal matters. They will also mentor and support the CEO in understanding legal obligations, contracts, and other legal needs.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing organisation at the forefront of nature conservation and rewilding in London. We welcome candidates with a passion for supporting nature recovery, who come from a non-nature related background.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and advising on organisational policies
  • Ensuring legal compliance with all relevant regulations
  • Providing guidance on legal risk management and mitigation strategies
  • Offering legal guidance on potential disputes involving suppliers, partners, or other stakeholders
  • Reviewing contracts, agreements, and partnerships
  • Mentoring the CEO on legal matters related to the organisation's growth, development, and legal compliance

Requirements:

  • Former or current partner at a recognised law firm, or held or holds a senior legal position in a corporation or non-profit
  • Extensive experience in corporate governance, compliance, contract law, and risk management
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic legal advice to boards of directors
