Job Description

Job Title: Clinical Scientist - Cytogenetics/Cytogenomics

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Scientist to join our team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality clinical services in cytogenetics and cytogenomics, working closely with our team of experts to provide accurate and timely results.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver clinical services in cytogenetics and cytogenomics to nationally accepted standards.
  • Undertake or supervise the receipt, processing, and analysis of samples, and the checking, interpretation, and reporting of results.
  • Interpret results with advice on further action for patients or family members, including calculation of risk where appropriate.
  • Maintain up-to-date specialist-level knowledge of current scientific literature and information for defined services.
  • Maintain proficiency in the use of complex software for the analysis of genomic samples.

Person Specification:

Education/Qualifications, Experience, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Good first degree in Genetics or Biological Science with a genetics component.
  • Postgraduate professional qualification (Certificate of Competence in Clinical Cytogenetics/STP) or equivalent experience.
  • Registration - Clinical Scientist (Clinical Cytogenetics or Genetics).
  • PhD/DPhil in a relevant subject area.

Experience:

  • Proven, extensive experience of Clinical Molecular Genetics in a diagnostic laboratory or similar if combined with relevant research experience.
  • Good working knowledge of the majority of analytical methodologies used in the laboratory achieved through training and experience.
  • Writing complex clinical reports.

Desirable:

  • Translational research and development through formal funded programs of work.
  • Bioinformatics, handling, and manipulating large data sets.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Thorough in-depth knowledge of human genetics, theoretical, and practical aspects of clinical cytogenetics.
