London, Greater London, United Kingdom Canal & River Trust Full time

Job Title: Community Engagement Lead

Salary: £39,588 + £4k per annum Inner London Allowance + Benefits

Working Hours: 37 Hours Monday - Friday

Location: Remote work with regular travel around the London and South East region. The central hub is located in Little Venice, with an expectation of working from the hub a minimum of 3-4 days a month. In addition to working from the hub, this role will involve frequent travel to project sites and events predominantly in London.

Canal & River Trust is one of the UK's largest charities, dedicated to the stewardship and promotion of 2,000 miles of canals, rivers, and reservoirs across England and Wales. We believe that life is enriched by water, and our mission involves not only the maintenance of our waterways but also their promotion to the 8 million people who live near them, enhancing their well-being through accessible and local resources.

We are seeking a seasoned Community Engagement Lead. This role is pivotal in delivering funded and income-generating community engagement initiatives within the region. The Lead will collaborate with the Community Development Manager to strategically plan regional community development activities, focusing on areas of need and opportunity to bolster operational activities, enhance local ownership, and cultivate support for the Trust through fundraising and volunteerism.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in community engagement and will be adept at managing and nurturing senior-level relationships with external funders and partners in the London & South East region, ensuring that targets are met and reported effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

Serve as the primary contact for funded projects; managing and expanding relationships with funders while ensuring all reporting and monitoring is conducted. Execute funded programs, aligning with both funder and Trust objectives: Activation of canal spaces, incorporating community through well-being initiatives and tailored engagement activities, and enhancing brand visibility in project locales. Conduct stakeholder mapping to identify diverse communities, schools, young people, and local businesses that would benefit from our projects and the activation of canal spaces. Establish contact, build relationships, and plan engagement efforts accordingly. Proactively seek to expand funding and income generation opportunities. Act as the regional lead for community canoeing initiatives, ensuring oversight for safety, training, and delivery, while also representing the region in national forums.

Local Events

Lead and support regional events as necessary.

Volunteering Growth

Collaborate with the Community Development Manager to formulate a regional volunteering strategy. Identify, design, and expand volunteering opportunities in the region, supporting recruitment campaigns. Achieve targets aimed at increasing volunteer participation within the London & South East region.

Standards and Procedures

Uphold the Trust's values and behaviors consistently. Ensure that diversity and inclusion are integral to all aspects of Trust operations and promote an inclusive environment by challenging behaviors, practices, actions, or decisions that contradict the Trust's policies and values. Foster awareness of, and compliance with, the Trust's safeguarding policies and procedures. Consider relevant safeguarding factors in the planning and execution of all activities, events, and strategies.

Partnerships and Collaboration

Collaborate with external partners at a senior level and internal colleagues to develop and achieve strategic programs and targets. Work with colleagues regionally and nationally on community engagement priorities, building capacity to enhance the quality and diversity of our community engagement offerings. Partner closely with local operational teams to support budget-relieving activities. Coordinate with Enterprise Managers and Business & Corporate Engagement Partners to identify funding opportunities for further engagement activities. Cultivate strong working relationships with key partners across various organizations to ensure that participants and beneficiaries reflect local communities. Lead national initiatives and partnerships as appropriate, sharing best practices across regions and with national teams to ensure quality and consistency. Serve as the regional lead for various working groups.

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

Educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally in a relevant discipline. Experience in the charity sector, not-for-profit, heritage, or environmental organizations. Proven track record in delivering community programs and shaping strategies. Expertise in strategic partnership development and relationship management. Strong influencing, persuasion, and negotiation skills. Excellent interpersonal and people management abilities. Proficient written and verbal communication skills. Strong presentation skills. Experienced in networking and understanding the sector.
