About the Role

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the newly created position of Head of Policy and Public Affairs. This exciting opportunity will enable the successful candidate to shape the policy agenda for the RTPI and the planning system as a whole.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement effective policy and public affairs strategies to achieve the RTPI's objectives.
  • Lead the policy team and public affairs teams, providing oversight and line management responsibilities.
  • Be the primary point of contact for the England Policy Committee and National Directors to ensure effective operation across the UK.
  • Collaborate with Government, parliamentarians, and across Whitehall to advocate on behalf of the membership.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including Government departments, parliamentarians, and industry leaders.
  • Provide strategic advice to the Director of Communications and other senior leaders on policy and public affairs matters.
Requirements
  • Chartered planner with excellent working knowledge of the planning systems of the UK.
  • Experience in active public affairs or a strong working knowledge of central Government.
  • Active curiosity for how planning and public policy interact, and recognition of the need for outcomes from the RTPI's activity.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
