Position Overview

We acknowledge that the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) presents a stimulating yet demanding environment. We encourage you to collaborate with us in crafting a job plan that is both sustainable and allows you to perform at your highest potential.

Your role may involve dividing your time between the AMU and another specialty, engaging in research, teaching, or enhancing your management skills.

Regardless of your choice, you will be supported by a Trust that genuinely values its personnel and is committed to exceptional patient care, continuous learning, and swift career advancement.

If this innovative and progressive approach resonates with you, we invite you to explore opportunities with us.

Key Responsibilities

For a comprehensive overview of the primary responsibilities associated with this position, please refer to the detailed job description below. As an integral member of the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, you will join a remarkable team dedicated to assisting our patients in maintaining their health during critical times.

About Our Organization

Spanning Northern, Eastern, and Mid Devon, we employ over 15,000 staff, making us the largest employer in the region. Our core services cater to more than 615,000 individuals across over 2,000 square miles, with some specialized services extending throughout the peninsula, reaching as far as Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

We provide a diverse array of emergency, specialized, and general medical services through our facilities.

In addition to our two acute hospitals, we offer integrated health and social care services across various settings, including community inpatient facilities, outpatient clinics, and home care. Our services also encompass primary care, a variety of specialized community services, and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC).

With cutting-edge equipment, leading technologies, and strong partnerships with local universities, we are at the forefront of research and innovation, enabling us to deliver world-class care to our communities.

Now is an exciting time to join the Royal Devon, as you will play a role in shaping our services as we advance in our integration journey.

Role Details

Established in April 2022 through the merger of two NHS Trusts, our combined acute medicine units provide assessment and urgent treatment to a population of 615,000, with specialized services available to a broader audience across the South West Peninsula.

We are seeking consultant colleagues to join our acute medicine team in North Devon, collaborating with forward-thinking physicians in a dynamic Trust that empowers you to implement changes in our services and significantly impact patient welfare. Our Acute Medicine Unit (AMU) features 28 beds and a newly developed Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) area, which innovates care by providing rapid access to diagnostics and procedures. Experienced middle-grade doctors manage suitable patients, fully supported by a team of Advanced Care Practitioners. Building on our achievements, we aim to expand this service and increase the proportion of patients receiving same-day care.

Our robust Virtual Ward setup allows patients to receive care at home while undergoing daily reviews, monitoring, investigations, and treatments that were previously available only as inpatients.

The Trust boasts an electronic patient record system, a multi-million-pound research facility, a significant development budget, and ambitious plans for the future.

We are dedicated to offering genuinely feasible job plans, recognizing the challenges inherent in acute medicine. As a consultant group, we advocate for diverse working options and varied portfolios to ensure our roles are balanced and sustainable. If you are interested in discussing a job plan that combines specialty work with acute medicine, we encourage you to reach out.
