Job Overview

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head Biomedical Scientist to lead our Blood Sciences department. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of senior staff and delivering a high-quality medical laboratory service to support patient care and resource management within the hospital.

Main Duties

The Head Biomedical Scientist will be responsible for:

  • Leading a team of senior staff to deliver a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service
  • Maintaining and developing a high-quality service
  • Managing the day-to-day operation of the Blood Sciences department
  • Providing expert advice on complex laboratory methodology
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards
Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Managing a team of senior staff to deliver a high-quality medical laboratory service
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards
  • Providing expert advice on complex laboratory methodology
  • Managing the day-to-day operation of the Blood Sciences department
  • Developing and implementing strategies to improve service delivery and patient outcomes
Requirements

The successful candidate will need to have:

  • Significant post-registration experience working in a diagnostic pathology laboratory
  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of the medical blood sciences laboratory
  • Experience of managing teams and people management
  • Proven experience of performing staff appraisals
  • Experience of policy writing and preparation of standard operating procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
Education and Qualifications

The successful candidate will need to have:

  • Fellow of Institute of Biomedical Science
  • Registered with the Health & Care Professions Council
  • Extensive post-registration experience at a senior level with substantial relevant experience at Band 8a management level
  • Management/Leadership Training or qualification
  • Evidence of CPD and postgraduate training in specialized areas
  • A Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
  • MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent in appropriate specialty
Special Circumstances

The successful candidate will need to have:

  • A full driving license and a car owner to be able to travel across sites
