Position Overview

We are pleased to present an opportunity for a dedicated pharmacist to become a vital member of our healthcare team. If you are a passionate and driven clinical pharmacist with a focus on neurology, this role may be ideal for you. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to enhance the pharmacy services dedicated to neurology.

The position entails working closely with the neurology department to define the responsibilities of a prescribing pharmacist within our outpatient clinics, while also promoting medication optimization and effectiveness across both inpatient and outpatient neurology services.

Initially concentrating on therapies for multiple sclerosis, this role will allow you to leverage your expertise as a non-medical prescriber within the neurology field.

Key Responsibilities

1. Serve as an advanced pharmacy practitioner within the neurology specialty, planning care and identifying concerns related to medication use.

2. Function as an Independent Prescriber (IP) and further develop the role of pharmacist independent prescriber within the organization.

3. Deliver a specialized clinical pharmacy service to patients in neurology wards and outpatient settings, adhering to clinical pharmacy standards and objectives.

4. Conduct thorough checks on all prescriptions prior to dispensing, addressing any unusual dosages, potential drug interactions, or incompatibilities with the prescriber for confirmation or modification before authorizing dispensing.

5. Assist in clinical decision-making to ensure patient safety and medication effectiveness through the medicines optimization agenda.

6. Engage with patients regarding their medication concerns and coordinate with other healthcare professionals in both primary and secondary care as necessary.

7. Review external audit results related to patient care and develop action plans as needed.

8. Assume the role of Responsible Pharmacist in the dispensary during registered activities, as required by the rota or out of hours, in accordance with the relevant organizational guidelines.

Job Responsibilities

Specialist Leadership

1. Lead and enhance the clinical pharmacy service for the neurology specialty within the organization, including the establishment and monitoring of quality standards.

2. Develop and maintain a team-oriented model for clinical pharmacy service delivery.

3. Act as the primary liaison for the specialty, leading pharmacy-related initiatives in service development, medication introduction, and provision of specialized information.

4. Regularly meet with the Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager to formulate a strategic plan for clinical pharmacy services.

5. Provide the Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager with detailed reports on the output, performance, and activities of the clinical pharmacy service within the neurology specialty at agreed intervals.

6. Actively participate in organization-wide medicines assurance, governance, and specialty meetings to advocate for the safe and effective use of medications and the role of pharmacy in medication optimization.

7. Prepare business cases to support the development of clinical pharmacy services within the specialty.

8. Collaborate in the creation of Integrated Care Pathways, clinical guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures, Patient Group Directions, and other necessary policies within the specialty and pharmacy department.

9. Support the investigation of medication-related safety incidents and the formulation of action plans to address identified issues across the organization.

Qualifications

Essential

  • M Pharm Degree or equivalent / General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) registration
  • Postgraduate diploma (Diploma or MSc) in clinical pharmacy, community pharmacy, or a related field
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, including CPD
  • Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification

Desirable

  • Management experience
  • Experience in outpatient clinic settings
  • Membership in the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience as a qualified pharmacist
  • Experience working across departmental and organizational boundaries
  • Knowledge of financial systems and structures
  • Experience in the field of Neurology

Desirable

  • Previous experience as a specialist pharmacist
  • Experience in service development

Skills

Essential

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to create SOPs
  • Presentation skills for teaching and report writing
