Position Overview: Locum Executive Publisher

Role Summary

The Springer Nature Journals group is committed to aiding researchers in effectively communicating and advancing discoveries for a better world. We strive to create a reliable environment where researchers can swiftly, easily, and transparently share their findings, data, and research narratives.

We seek a skilled professional with a background in journal publishing to oversee the commercial viability, strategic growth, and reputation of a selection of journals within the BMC Academic Journals team. This portfolio focuses on the Asia Pacific region and collaborates closely with society partners. The role entails optimizing the efficiency and profitability of the portfolio, identifying emerging subject areas, and advocating for the needs of the journals, Editors-in-Chief, and sponsoring societies. Utilizing your leadership and influencing abilities, you will mentor and guide the portfolio team to achieve business objectives. Key Responsibilities:
  • Enhance the efficiency and profitability of a diverse portfolio of journals across various disciplines within the BMC Academic Journals.
  • Establish annual revenue and cost budgets in collaboration with the Publishing Director, monitoring performance to ensure targets are achieved and implementing corrective measures as necessary.
  • Contribute to the overarching strategy and development of the journal portfolio, ensuring alignment with the broader objectives of Springer Nature.
  • Drive and assess team performance against journal development plans.
  • Oversee and support the timely development of proposals for new partner journals and the renewal of existing agreements, including financial projections and business offers.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with other departments to ensure the effective execution of functional tasks such as technology, marketing, production, and finance.
  • Comprehend business opportunities and requirements in key global regions where Springer Nature operates, including competitor analysis and growth trends.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and support to a global team of Publishers, demonstrating influence across the team and the organization.
  • Engage regularly with Publishers to review progress against objectives and conduct annual performance and development evaluations.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Proven experience in STM publishing with a comprehensive understanding of the Open Access market.
  • Preferred line management or supervisory experience working with global teams.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Customer-oriented mindset.
  • Strong prioritization and time management capabilities.
  • Robust financial acumen, including budgeting and P&L oversight.
  • Able to work collaboratively within a team.
