They will have a keen visual sense and an understanding of the various platforms where content is published and promoted, ensuring that the subjects resonate with our discerning and affluent audience.

This role is situated within a small, collaborative team dedicated to long-form features, utilizing both in-house writers and a diverse range of freelance contributors. The team engages in regular brainstorming sessions and other collaborative forums to develop special issues and larger projects, providing opportunities to lead these initiatives alongside the weekly editorial flow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commission and edit long-form features, interviews, and news articles, with a particular focus on enhancing interviews across diverse subject areas.
  • Establish and maintain strong connections within the literary, entertainment, and arts sectors, while also expanding these networks across other areas of interest.
  • Recruit freelance contributors and cultivate relationships with talented freelance writers.
  • Oversee regular magazine features as needed.
  • Generate a continuous stream of fresh ideas tailored to The Telegraph Magazine's sophisticated demographic.

This position is designed for a driven and seasoned journalist eager to apply their existing skills and experience to large-scale projects across multiple media. The candidate should be well-versed in the distinct requirements of print and digital presentation, as well as adept in social media and newsletter promotion.

They will be expected to analyze The Telegraph's performance metrics and explore innovative ways to enhance them. There are no limits to creative digital features, and within their first year, this commissioning editor can anticipate developing pioneering content strategies that will be implemented across other editorial segments.

The ideal candidate will be brimming with ideas, equally comfortable commissioning a long-form report on technological advancements as they are conducting interviews with prominent figures. They must possess a sharp eye for newsworthy content, capable of identifying compelling stories from unpublished works and upcoming television documentaries.

The Telegraph Magazine upholds exceptional production standards, and the commissioning editor will collaborate closely with the picture director, art director, visual storytelling, and digital teams to provide direction and requirements for each feature.

While primarily office-based, the role will involve outreach to cultivate relationships with writers and publicists, requiring initiative and experience to uncover outstanding ideas.
