About the Organization
Trade Union Congress is a prominent trade union dedicated to providing support, representation, and a unified voice for its members. With a workforce of approximately 250 staff, we represent a diverse membership of 158,000 individuals across various sectors.
Role Overview
We are in search of a National Secretary to oversee, guide, and enhance a team located in our London office, primarily engaging with our public sector branches and employers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a dedicated team, ensuring effective support and guidance for our members and branches.
- Develop and implement policy objectives and collective bargaining strategies to position the Congress as the authoritative voice for professionals in the civil service and other public sector roles.
- Utilize advanced negotiation, lobbying, and influencing skills to advocate for our members within the industrial, regulatory, and political landscapes.
- Foster strong relationships with senior public sector stakeholders and understand the dynamics of campaigning through research and organizing.
- Contribute to the growth of membership and influence through effective representation and support for branch elected representatives.
Essential Qualifications
- Proven negotiation expertise.
- Experience managing complex casework, including Employment Tribunal matters.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities with a focus on staff development and objective achievement.
- Effective communication skills with colleagues, representatives, members, and stakeholders.
- Knowledge of contemporary member organization and recruitment strategies.
- Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to provide high-level policy and industrial communications under the direction of senior leadership.
- Extensive knowledge of pensions, health and safety, and employment law.
- A commitment to enhancing the workplace for all through union values.
- A valid UK driving license.
Desirable Skills
- Proficiency in IT, particularly with Microsoft Office/365, Outlook, and Teams.
- Experience in project management and campaigning.
