Healthcare Capacity Supervisor

Peterborough, Peterborough, United Kingdom North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job Overview

The Capacity Manager plays a crucial role in overseeing the operational aspects of patient flow throughout the hospital's medical and surgical departments. This position is essential for ensuring that patient pathways are managed effectively, contributing to the Trust's strategic and operational goals.

The Capacity Manager collaborates closely with medical and surgical teams, as well as specialty managers, to anticipate admissions and respond promptly to emergency care needs. This includes managing urgent and emergency care pathways and supporting Family Integrated Support Services (FISS).

Key Responsibilities

The Capacity Manager is responsible for the daily operations of capacity management, ensuring that all processes run smoothly. This role includes supervising Patient Flow Coordinator colleagues and assisting the Site Senior Manager in meeting both local and national healthcare standards.

In this capacity, the manager supports all staff members, working both during and outside regular hours to guarantee the efficient use of resources for quality patient care. The role requires autonomy, with the Site Senior Manager available for support in escalating issues and maintaining acute services.

The Capacity Manager is instrumental in achieving the Emergency Department target of 95% of patients being seen, treated, admitted, or discharged within four hours. This involves identifying and addressing delays in patient pathways to ensure safety and quality of care.

Interventions may include proactive measures to eliminate delays, such as coordinating test results, transport, and discharge plans. The manager may also assess patient well-being, leveraging clinical knowledge and experience to collaborate effectively with clinicians and ward teams for optimal patient outcomes.

With expert knowledge of NHS patient pathways, the Capacity Manager supports and acts on behalf of the Site Senior Manager, working alongside senior nursing and management teams to ensure targets are consistently met.

In a corporate capacity across all divisions, the Capacity Manager ensures that available resources are utilized effectively to maintain patient flow and safety, particularly in light of infection prevention and control measures.
