Role and Responsibilities
We are seeking a skilled Data Journalist to join our award-winning Visual and Data Journalism team. As a Data Journalist, you will be responsible for applying data engineering and data science methods to news automation, including sourcing and analyzing the data underpinning some of our highest-profile projects.
Main Responsibilities:
- Conduct medium- to long-term data investigations and projects that require building and maintaining automated pipelines for acquiring, cleaning, and analyzing continuously-updating data.
- Drive our effort to automate analysis and reporting of data-rich subjects, including financial markets, global economics, electoral politics, public policy, and climate change.
- Collaborate with data journalists, graphics journalists, and front-end developers in the wider Visual & Data Journalism team, as well as reporters and editors from all parts of the newsroom who need support applying computational methods to their work.
Requirements:
- Experience using data journalism or data science techniques to find and tell news stories.
- Confidence using R or Python for data sourcing (including web scraping), cleaning, and analysis.
- Knowledge of working collaboratively with others on coding projects using version control systems such as Git.
- Strong communication skills, particularly the ability to explain quantitative analysis work simply to non-specialist audiences.
Desirable Skills:
- Training in statistics, data science, or quantitative social science methods.
- Experience building, maintaining, or working with processes for continuously acquiring and processing data or maintaining statistical models based on such data.
- Applying data analysis in economic, business, or financial journalism.
- Developing data visualizations using D3, React, or Flourish.
- Working with automation processes that use machine learning techniques, such as natural language generation tools, text analysis, or document classification algorithms.
- Use of machine learning or large language models in a journalism context.
- Writing data documentation for non-technical users.
- Training and supporting others in data handling techniques.
- Data analysis work related to political polling and elections, international trade, warfare, or uncovering corporate wrongdoing.
- Building and maintaining databases using tools such as SQL or BigQuery.
- Building and maintaining datasets for personalized interactive stories and tools.
- Collaborating with data providers, subject specialists, journalists, designers, and developers to deliver data-driven stories and data visualizations for a non-specialist audience.
