About Our Team:

This role is part of the Journals Editorial Department, a thriving team of highly productive individuals who are passionate about research. We are responsible for the management, development, and growth of a large portfolio of valuable, high-quality journals. We work closely with external editors, society partners, and internal colleagues to drive the success and long-term sustainability of the programme.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively manage journal editor performance, establishing and implementing best practice for manuscript submission, peer review process, revision, and resubmission policies, and optimal editorial board function.
  • Manage the profitability of assigned portfolios of journals, with a view to maximizing revenues and controlling costs. Implement activities with other departments and external partners to ensure action taken where necessary to make improvements to financial performance.
  • Provide information and advice to journal editors and partner societies to help them improve the quality of content published in their journals. Compile and assess key data and metrics, using this data to inform recommendations on each journal's development strategy.
  • Successfully negotiate editor and society contract renewals, produce profit and loss statements, prepare draft contracts, and lead contract approval processes through to contract signature.
  • Liaise with other departments to ensure that the journals are produced, marketed, and distributed in an appropriate way and within acceptable costs.
  • Support senior colleagues as required with departmental projects and tasks.

Requirements:

  • Proficient in standard IT packages, including Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrable interest in and commitment to higher education and academic publishing.
  • Experience in running journals, ideally at an academic or scientific journal publisher.
  • Good understanding of the journal publication process and industry.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, able to deliver presentations and communicate information confidently and clearly.
  • Excellent relationship management skills: ability to build positive relationships both internally and externally.
  • Project management skills: ability to work on many projects within tight time pressures in a dynamic environment.
