Position Overview
We are excited to announce an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Diamond Light Source. This role is situated within the B07 beamline, which specializes in x-ray spectroscopy across various environments, from ultra-high vacuum to ambient pressure. The beamline has been operational for a significant period and is utilized for investigating heterogeneous catalysts and electrochemical interfaces under mild reaction conditions, alongside related research endeavors.
The primary scientific aim of this position is to enhance the understanding of the correlation between structure/composition and activity/selectivity of well-defined alloy and oxide nanoparticles in both vacuum and gas-phase settings. The successful candidate will engage with a newly acquired, cutting-edge size-selected cluster source and other advanced instrumentation available at Diamond, such as X-ray spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Responsibilities will include refining the research agenda, coordinating beamtime proposals, and conducting experiments at beamlines and within the laboratory environment. Additionally, there will be opportunities to provide limited support for beamline users.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and further advance the beamline's size-selected cluster program.
- Assist users and in-house researchers utilizing the cluster source.
- Conduct periodic reviews of relevant scientific literature.
- Synthesize nano-catalysts and investigate size effects in heterogeneous catalysis (to be confirmed with the line manager).
- Maintain communication with national and international project collaborators.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess an appropriate Science Degree or equivalent, along with a relevant PhD and demonstrated experience in soft x-ray techniques for chemical and structural analysis of surfaces, including x-ray absorption or photoemission spectroscopy. Candidates with expertise in ambient-pressure spectroscopies and research fields such as Heterogeneous Catalysis or clusters are particularly encouraged to consider this opportunity.
The post holder will be expected to conduct some of their work at facilities beyond Diamond Light Source.
