About the Organisation & the Role

The International Documentary Festival Sheffield (DocFest) is seeking applications for a new Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Sheffield DocFest is a prestigious charitable entity, known for hosting one of the foremost documentary film and arts festivals globally, which highlights, shares, and discusses non-fiction films.

This festival is operated by the International Documentary Festival Sheffield, an independent registered charity, dedicated to promoting the art of film, education, and training in documentary filmmaking across various formats.

As we prepare for our upcoming edition, the festival attracts around 2,300 international industry professionals and 37,000 public attendees from over 55 countries annually.

With our current Chair planning to step down after successfully guiding the organisation through recent editions, we are now in search of a new Chair of the Board of Trustees. This position presents a remarkable opportunity for an individual with proven leadership experience who is enthusiastic about documentary and non-fiction storytelling, as well as the significance and influence of the screen, broadcast, journalism, and arts sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preside over four trustee meetings annually and manage additional sub-committee meetings (meetings are held in various locations and online)
  • Accountable for approving audited financial statements and the annual report
  • Participate in significant events such as the festival's Opening Night
  • Assist the festival leadership team in formulating organisational strategies and/or substantial funding proposals for new initiatives
  • Foster an inclusive environment within the board, encouraging active participation from all members

This role is voluntary, with travel and expenses reimbursed.

Desired Qualifications and Attributes:

  • A minimum of three years of experience as a charity trustee (essential)
  • Demonstrated leadership in the cultural sector or executive management experience within a large media, film, or television organisation
  • Comprehension of charity finance and the capability to assess and interpret financial information
  • Proven track record in stakeholder engagement and network building
  • Familiarity with the international film festival landscape and/or international broadcast sector
  • Experience in leading strategic planning and/or organisational transformation
  • Knowledge of creative production in documentary film or television
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion as fundamental principles

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Proper appointment must follow the procedures outlined in the organisation's governing documents.

Individuals disqualified under the Charities Act cannot serve as trustees.

This includes those who:

  • Have an unspent conviction for an offence involving dishonesty or deception;
  • Are bankrupt or have entered into a formal arrangement with a creditor;
  • Have been removed as a company director or charity trustee due to misconduct;

A DBS check may be required, and any offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory outcome.
