Main Responsibilities

Reporting to the Area Commercial Manager, the Senior Estimator will collaborate closely with the Estimating Manager. The primary focus of this role is to assist the Commercial Team in achieving projected budgets through effective pricing strategies and managing the tendering process efficiently.

As a Senior Estimator, your responsibilities will include:

  • Negotiating and securing work contracts
  • Building and nurturing strong relationships with both new and existing clients, while working cohesively within a team
  • Overseeing the preparation and submission of all pricing documentation for the contracting business, ensuring adherence to internal review protocols
  • Identifying and pursuing new business opportunities, ensuring the submission of high-quality, competitive tenders while considering business capacity, margins, and associated risks
  • Conducting pre-contract commercial evaluations to pinpoint opportunities and risks in proposed contracts
  • Performing detailed analyses of subcontractor and supplier quotes for inclusion in tenders and providing tender handover reports to the operations team
  • Developing and influencing bidding strategies, while researching market trends and data to enhance bid success
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability standards
  • Mentoring and developing Apprentices within the team
The Ideal Candidate

Ideal candidates for the Senior Estimator position will possess a commercial estimating background, preferably within the highways surfacing sector. However, candidates with experience in civil engineering are also encouraged to apply.

As a Senior Estimator, you should demonstrate:

  • Operational technical expertise, ideally within the highways sector
  • Experience in pricing various tenders, including those for local authorities and major projects
  • The ability to cultivate relationships with internal and external stakeholders across various seniority levels to secure work and enhance profitability
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • The capability to influence others and collaborate effectively as part of a team
  • Strong commercial insight and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Attention to detail
  • A strong drive for success, improvement, and innovation
  • Proven sales abilities and negotiation skills
  • Familiarity with NEC 3 and 4 forms of contract
  • Experience with Causeway 3 Estimating software (desirable)
