Job Overview

The Respiratory Virus Unit (RVU) operates within the Virus Reference Department (VRD) at the UK Health Security Agency. As the WHO National Influenza Centre for the UK, RVU serves as the National Reference Laboratory for various respiratory virus pathogens. The unit collaborates globally, providing essential technical support and expertise to national laboratories, including its role as a WHO Reference Laboratory for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS CoV).

Key Responsibilities:

As a vital member of the team, you will take on delegated responsibilities from the Unit Head and Clinical Scientist, including:

  • Development and implementation of serological and molecular techniques for the detection and analysis of respiratory viral infections, such as influenza, SARS, and RSV. This encompasses supporting high-throughput studies related to seroepidemiology and vaccination.
  • Conducting a variety of specialized virological, technical, and scientific activities on samples referred from various laboratories, including NHS and academic institutions.
  • Validation and application of methods to investigate serological responses to infections and vaccinations, ensuring these methods are ready for broader diagnostic use.
  • Facilitating the setup and management of externally funded research studies.
  • Processing Containment Level 3 (CL3) samples with adherence to safety protocols.
  • Providing training and performance monitoring for laboratory staff.
  • Maintaining a strong understanding of clinical virology and ensuring compliance with professional standards.
  • Effective communication with team members and healthcare professionals, ensuring high standards of laboratory performance.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications:

  • A degree in biological sciences with relevant laboratory experience in microbiology or virology.
  • Proven ability to work independently across all areas of the Virology laboratory with a focus on accuracy.
  • Demonstrated experience in Microbiology/Virology, with practical knowledge of recombinant viral proteins and molecular detection techniques.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate complex data and communicate findings effectively.
  • Capability to organize workloads and train less experienced staff while managing day-to-day operations.
  • Experience working within a quality system, adhering to UKAS ISO15189 and GCP standards.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable, able to respond to changing priorities and meet deadlines.
