Imerys British Lithium is seeking a skilled Process Development Scientist to join our team in Cornwall.

About the Role:

You will be responsible for developing and improving novel process technologies for extracting, refining, and purifying lithium from micaceous granites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct bench-scale trials and experiments in the Metallurgical Laboratory and within the Pilot Plant areas.
  • Develop and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring safe operation and contributing to sustaining capital and improvement capital requests.
  • Log and record trial and analytical data, and provide technical reporting of the outcomes of bench-scale trials.
  • Deputise for the Person in Charge (PIC) of the Metallurgical Laboratory facility and equipment, or a sub-area thereof.
  • Undertake basic maintenance and calibrations of laboratory equipment.
  • Coordinate samples for analytical assays, including collecting, labelling, and shipping.
  • Ensure the safe storage, use, and disposal of chemicals in the laboratory, including updating COSHH records and contributing to COSHH Risk Assessments.
  • Contribute to reviewing, developing, and maintaining QA/QC policies for the collection, testing, and analysis of samples, ensuring proper chain of custody.
  • Develop experimental programmes to support process engineering design activities.
  • Produce technical memoranda, progress reports, and technical report sections for key Project phases.
  • Undertake sample collection, sample preparation, drying, filtration, splitting, crushing, pulverising, pelletising, pXRF testing.

Requirements:

  • Experience in mineral and chemical process technologies within a mining environment.
  • Degree-level qualification in Chemistry or an earth science.
  • Experience of working in a process laboratory environment, with knowledge of inorganic chemical processes and lithium chemistries.
  • Knowledge of health & safety standards and COSHH regulations, and ideally, a vocational health and safety qualification.
  • Working knowledge of process design for mineral and chemical processes.
