Submarine Safety Consultant

Role Overview

As a Submarine Safety Consultant, you will be responsible for delivering expert technical safety guidance and subject matter expertise across a diverse range of submarine and underwater system projects, directly contributing to the UK submarine sector.

Your extensive knowledge of submarine operations and equipment, including maintenance and repair protocols, will enable you to effectively manage safety projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards, while adhering to client requirements and UK regulations.

Work Environment & Flexibility

We offer a flexible working environment with multiple office locations across the UK. We are open to discussing hybrid working arrangements. Please be aware that travel to client sites or meetings may be necessary. This position can be offered on a part-time, job-share, or full-time basis, as we aim to attract the best talent, recognizing that not all candidates are available for full-time roles.

Candidate Profile

This position is ideal for a Safety Engineer with prior experience in the defence sector or a former Submariner seeking to transition into safety engineering. Candidates should ideally possess experience in the operation and/or maintenance of Royal Navy submarines and equipment, along with familiarity with relevant technical documentation and safety requirements.

Additional qualifications may include:

  • Knowledge of safety management for Nuclear Facilities and associated licensing conditions;
  • Understanding of safety regulations, policies, and standards, particularly those relevant to UK MOD submarine safety, such as Defence Safety Authority (DSA) Regulations and Defence Nuclear Safety Regulations;
  • Practical experience in developing and managing hazard logs, facilitating HAZID meetings, and authoring safety assessments, including justifying ALARP status;
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present information professionally, both verbally and in writing, as our work is client-focused;
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to achieving professional accreditation, such as IEng or CEng, with support and training available for those seeking to obtain these qualifications.

To be eligible for this role, candidates must meet the requirements for UK Security Clearance at SC level and will undergo security checks.
