The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking a highly skilled Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our esteemed team. Our Department of Gastroenterology provides comprehensive services to the county of Shropshire and Mid Wales, with a team of 9 Consultant Gastroenterologists and 1 Consultant Hepatologist working across both hospital sites.
Main ResponsibilitiesClinical Duties:
- Provide independent care for patients alongside consultant staff, taking responsibility for their continuing care.
- Participate in the Gastroenterology on-call rota, ensuring seamless coverage for emergency cases.
- Work independently to care for patients with gastrointestinal complaints, managing a mix of emergency and elective cases.
- Contribute to audit and governance initiatives, supporting the training of junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Perform administrative duties in support of clinical commitments, ensuring efficient workflow.
- Participate in the Upper GI/Hepatobiliary Cancer Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), collaborating with colleagues to deliver high-quality patient care.
- Develop enhanced clinical skills, particularly in assessing and managing acutely ill patients.
- Demonstrate excellent team-working skills, with a professional attitude and ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Deliver clinical and quality targets agreed with clinical teams and commissioners, ensuring alignment with national and local objectives.
- Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways, ensuring continuity of care.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is the primary provider of acute hospital services for approximately half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and Mid Wales. Our catchment area spans picturesque regions, including the Cambrian Mountains, Newport, and the Black Country.
Our main service locations are the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) in Shrewsbury, which are located approximately 20 minutes' drive apart. Both hospitals offer a wide range of acute hospital services, including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care, and critical care.
Job Plan and ExpectationsA formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director, within 3 months of starting in post. The job plan will be reviewed annually and will cover all aspects of a consultant's professional practice, including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities.
The job plan will be divided into three main areas:
- Direct Clinical Care (5.5 Programmed Activities): includes clinical activity, clinically related activity, and predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
- Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) (2.5 Programmed Activities): includes continuing professional development, audit, teaching, and research.
- Research (2 Programmed Activities): includes delivery of portfolio research, development of own research ideas/protocols, working with current research fellows, and supporting the development of an embedded research culture at SaTH.
Out-of-hours activity will require participation in an on-call rota, primarily for GI bleeds, with a frequency of approximately 1 in 8. Weekend on-call will require on-site input on Saturday and Sunday mornings, as well as on-call from home to advise on other gastroenterological cases emergencies at other times.
