Microalgal Biotechnology Research Associate
2 months ago
Position Overview
This graduate research associate role is situated within the esteemed group of Dr. Jon Pittman in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at The University of Manchester. The primary focus of this short-term position is to assess the manipulation of microalgal biomass for enhanced applications in feedstock for various sectors including feed, food, pharmaceuticals, and biofuels production.
Project Objectives
Recent studies have indicated that certain stressors, such as non-mutagenic doses of electromagnetic radiation, can significantly improve the performance of microalgal cultures, particularly in terms of metabolite yield and biomass, while maintaining cell viability. This project aims to further validate these findings to establish the feasibility of the process on a larger scale and with alternative microbial strains.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be tasked with:
- Validating recent research findings to establish proof-of-concept for commercial viability.
- Cultivating various microalgal strains and conducting experimental characterizations post-stress exposure.
- Utilizing physiological and biochemical methods to quantify changes in biomass and metabolites.
- Analyzing data and disseminating results through comprehensive report writing and presentations.
- Collaborating with industrial partners and effectively communicating project developments.
Candidate Profile
The ideal applicant should possess a robust background in microbiology, biotechnology, or a related biological science discipline, along with relevant research experience. Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are essential. Candidates should hold or expect to attain a BSc, MSc, or PhD degree (or equivalent).
