Role Overview

As a Senior Ecologist, you will take the lead in securing, establishing, and monitoring our network of sites across England, focusing on your designated geographical area. This role encompasses a broad range of responsibilities, supported by our team of Ecologists, Land Managers, and the wider Project Delivery team. You will oversee and manage all facets of large-scale nature recovery initiatives - Habitat Banks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage Habitat Bank projects from inception to completion, ensuring compliance with project timelines, budgets, and objectives.
  • Conduct ecological surveys, including site assessments, habitat classification, and specialized botanical surveys as required.
  • Analyze ecological data, interpret results, and prepare Biodiversity Net Gain assessments using the Biodiversity Metric.
  • Lead habitat design and develop Habitat Management Plans with technical support from the broader team as necessary, utilizing GIS for digital mapping and habitat proposals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with landowners and stakeholders throughout the Habitat Bank process.
  • Assist the Capital Works Team in habitat creation, implement the Habitat Management Plan, and support subcontractor management and compliance.
  • Organize and conduct monitoring surveys for existing offset sites and habitat banks, collaborating with landowners and managers to refine management plans.
  • Prepare reports, including Biodiversity Appraisals and literature reviews of relevant documentation and guidance.
  • Stay informed about current research and developments in ecology, particularly regarding UK Biodiversity Net Gain and Natural Capital, to inform decision-making.
  • Mentor junior ecologists, providing technical guidance and fostering their professional growth.
  • Engage with key external stakeholders, including local communities and conservation groups, to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to business development by identifying new project opportunities and participating in proposal preparation and presentations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's and Master's degrees in ecology, environmental science, biology, or a related discipline.
  • CIEEM Full Membership.
  • FISC Level 4 or equivalent botanical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience as an ecologist, including project management responsibilities.
  • Strong understanding of ecological principles, biodiversity conservation, and environmental impact assessment methodologies.
  • Proficient in conducting ecological fieldwork, including habitat surveys and species identification.
  • Experience with BNG and ecological data analysis using the Biodiversity Metric, statistical software, and GIS tools.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex ecological concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Leadership capabilities.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
