Job Overview

The Medical Equipment Management Service (MEMS) is looking for a Clinical Scientist to enhance our Clinical Engineering team.

In this role, you will collaborate with a dedicated group of Engineers and Scientists to deliver extensive technical assistance for the oversight and administration of medical devices throughout the organization. You will engage in various aspects of clinical engineering throughout the equipment lifecycle, particularly focusing on the strategic replacement of medical equipment. Your responsibilities will include working with clinical personnel to formulate technical specifications that align with clinical requirements and facilitating equipment trials and assessments.

You will oversee the integration of new equipment into clinical settings and establish appropriate maintenance and support frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Your role encompasses four main areas: Electronics and Mechanical Workshop, Medical Equipment Training, Equipment Library, and Clinical Engineering. The Clinical Engineering team is primarily tasked with managing medical devices across the organization, which includes planning for equipment replacement, providing technical support for patient safety, ensuring device connectivity, and overseeing research and innovation initiatives.

This position will involve comprehensive engagement with clinical colleagues to grasp clinical applications, develop detailed specifications, and support the implementation of cutting-edge technology to fulfill clinical needs. You will initiate and manage equipment trials and technical evaluations, contributing to the overall process of supplier and product selection as well as the deployment of the chosen solutions.

Job Responsibilities

With guidance from the Head of Clinical Engineering, the successful candidate will take a proactive role in medical device-related projects and maintain an efficient medical device inventory and audit program.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • 1st or 2nd class degree in a relevant field
  • Master's degree in Medical Engineering or equivalent
  • Post-graduate qualification related to medical device management or safety
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council

Desirable:

  • Training in project management

Knowledge and Skills

Essential:

  • Expertise in medical equipment management
  • Familiarity with legislation and guidelines relevant to device risk management and governance
  • Experience in planning and executing capital projects, including budget and resource management

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of adverse incident investigation techniques and their application in a healthcare context
  • Understanding of quality systems

Skills and Competencies

Essential:

  • Able to prioritize and manage individual workload effectively
  • Capable of exercising initiative when addressing common issues within the specialist area
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook

Desirable:

  • Able to develop and manage project plans while maintaining auditable records
