The London Assembly plays a crucial role in overseeing the Mayor's actions by questioning decisions and investigating significant issues affecting London. Comprising 25 Assembly Members elected every four years, the Assembly is supported by the Secretariat, which facilitates its operations. The Communications Team is responsible for promoting the Assembly's work through various channels including press relations, social media, and events.
About the Role:
This position offers a unique opportunity to serve as the Research and Policy Manager for the Conservative Members of the London Assembly. The role focuses on delivering research and policy assistance to the Members of the Group, alongside managing the associated staffing team. Collaborating closely with the Head of Office, this role is vital in aiding Assembly Members with their responsibilities and ensuring accountability of the Mayor of London. You will oversee the provision of research, policy briefings, reports, and advice to Assembly Members, while also crafting and executing comprehensive outreach and communication strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide daily management and leadership for the Senior Researchers within the team, ensuring effective execution of their responsibilities.
- Take charge of the production, publication, and related activities of reports for elected Members, aligning with their priorities across major policy domains.
- Design and implement proactive outreach and communication strategies for assigned Assembly Members, maintaining close coordination with communications, research, and support staff.
- Guarantee that elected Members receive exceptional research services and policy support, engaging with relevant external entities across public, private, and voluntary sectors to foster an exchange of ideas and information.
- Serve as a key point of contact for GLA officers regarding London Assembly scrutiny activities related to Group Members, ensuring effective communication of views and suggestions to enhance Members' influence within the Assembly.
- Assist the Head of Office in leading the broader team, providing problem-solving capabilities and operational support as needed.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
To qualify for this role, candidates must demonstrate the following:
- Extensive experience in a similar role within a political or high-profile environment, adept at resolving complex issues and liaising with external bodies.
- Proven ability to lead and inspire a team to implement policies, programs, and strategies effectively.
- Capability to produce clear and concise oral and written reports on complex matters for diverse audiences, ensuring utility for Assembly Members.
- Demonstrated experience in policy briefing within a political or public sector organization, with strong research skills to assimilate information from various sources on a wide range of policy topics.
- Comprehensive understanding of current policy challenges facing London, alongside knowledge of the legislative framework governing the GLA's operations.
