Islington, United Kingdom Hestia Housing Support Full time

We are Hestia. We make a difference.

At Hestia, we live by our values and are committed to a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive organisation that provides a variety of services such as Domestic Abuse, Modern Slavery, Mental Health & Complex Needs and Criminal Justice. We are committed to empower people to rebuild their lives and regain independence.

The service you will work in….

Approved Premises (AP) work with the highest-risk offenders and provide a vital element in public protection arrangements. AP offer a ‘stepping stone' from prison to more mainstream community life with a level of contact, support and supervision that does not exist anywhere else in the probation service.

Residents are seen on a daily basis and staff become involved in the resident's life to a very high degree: giving advice and offering support whilst exercising control and supervision, all the time liaising with the rest of the probation service and a wide range of agencies. This intense level of contact is what enables AP staff to monitor residents' well-being, to tailor support and to be aware of their actions and changes in their behaviour in a way that no other intervention can.

The role of AP staff is to encourage and facilitate residents to do all that they can for themselves, rather than to do the work for them. AP staff are not employed to work for residents, but to empower and enable them to do things for themselves. AP staff do not organise most residents' lives or time for them. Although some do require help in this aspect of their lives residents have freedom, including the freedom to make mistakes, even if there are negative consequences for them. Staff make residents aware of their responsibilities.

All client-facing staff working in the Approved Premises are subject to a rolling rota. For day staff this will include a combination of early, late and weekend shifts, and for Out of Hours workers, this will be night shifts only.

A day in this role looks like….

As an Out of Hours Intervention Worker at Hestia, you will play a crucial role in our Criminal Justice service. Your contributions will directly influence the lives of our service users, guiding them towards a path of empowerment and independence.

A day will never look the same and some of the things you can expect to do/be responsible for are:

  • Modelling pro-social behaviour and attitudes, helping to create and maintain a positive culture of respect in all work inside and outside of the service with both clients and colleagues.
  • Actively engaging with clients and providing opportunities to do so including preparation of supper and breakfast.
  • Contributing to delivery of the sentence plan in conjunction with colleagues in probation, the police and other external agencies.
  • Providing admin and other support to colleagues, particularly in the preparation, facilitation and evaluation of purposeful activities.
  • Ensuring all tasks detailed on the daily task sheets are carried out.
  • Following protocols, encouraging compliance and taking enforcement action as necessary, in particular around drug and alcohol testing requirements and curfews.
  • Ensuring that colleagues, multi-agency partners and management are informed and updated as necessary.
  • Actively monitoring and maintaining the health, safety, security, cleanliness and hygiene of the Approved Premises and the well-being of its occupants utilising information sharing, CCTV, direct observation, inspection, personal contact and other methods, as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that all related administration is done in good time; that detailed, concise and accurate records are created contemporaneously, that information is shared appropriately, and that confidentiality is properly maintained.
  • Using initiative to identify and deal with additional tasks or issues as they arise.

Why Hestia?

Joining Hestia means more than just a job; it's an opportunity to be part of something bigger. We offer a supportive, inclusive and resolution driven work environment where your contributions are recognised and valued. As a member of our team, you will have the chance to grow both personally and professionally while making a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.

We are looking for candidates who bring a combination of passion, expertise, and dedication to the table. To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • The ability to engage and communicate effectively with others to provide a flexible and responsive approach.
  • Being optimistic about the possibility of change and people's capacity to change.
  • The ability to learn quickly, gather information and make defensible decisions.
  • The capacity to maintain firm boundaries, using authority legitimately whilst working pro-socially and positively with people.
  • The ability to receive, process and accurately record detailed information, sharing it with others as appropriate and within the framework of confidentiality.
  • An understanding of the emotional and behavioural impact of trauma and the ability to work with people who may be display a range of emotions, behaviours and communication challenges.
  • The ability to work as part of a team, leading by example, taking a pragmatic, hands on approach to practical tasks such as cooking, gardening and other ‘household' chores and leisure activities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately.
  • Due to the nature of the role, this post is open to female only (exempt under the Equality Act 2010 Schedule 9, Part 1).
