This exciting post offers the opportunity to play an integral role in the delivery of the tertiary diabetes and endocrinology services in Oxfordshire.

By the end of your time in OCDEM, you will have a solid clinical knowledge base and will have built up a network of contacts for your future career. All of the consultants are very approachable and keen to support you as you progress through your training.

There is no general medicine commitment during your OCDEM block, so this is the time to immerse yourself in the specialty. There will be plenty of opportunities for audit, presentations, publications, service improvement initiatives and attendance at courses and conferences. It is worth setting some specific goals early in the year with your educational supervisor.

You will have a designated Educational supervisor. Please meet with them throughout your time in OCDEM. They will carry out required forms for ARCP but this is not their sole role and please keep in contact frequently. In addition you will each be assigned a clinical supervisor which will ( as much as possible), be mainly in a different subspecialist area to your ES ( i.e one in Endocrinology and the other in Diabetes). The clinical supervisor will be able to give support and feedback with regard to the clinical specialty. They will generally be responsible for forms etc for ARCP. You are encouraged to meet with them ay the start of the year and throughout.

You will be working very closely with the other SpRs, and the registrar body is one of the great strengths of OCDEM. Your colleagues who are already in post are often the best people to turn to for initial advice about anything. Please do support each other and flag up any collective problems with the consultants at the earliest possible opportunity. Unexpected work often crops up, so please try to be flexible and help out your colleagues if they are busy.

The wider MDT in OCDEM includes doctors, specialist nurses, dieticians, HCAs, podiatrists and secretaries. Please do introduce yourself to everyone when you join the department, and take advantage of the different and complementary skill sets that each team member will bring to the table.

It is encouraged that you touch base with the area you are covering daily and to inform everyone involved with the service in case of any changes to cover arrangements.

It is imperative that incoming calls on the diabetes and endocrinology phones are answered promptly

It is also important to support your junior colleagues - IMT/CMT trainees. They will rotate through the department in 6 monthly blocks. It is expected that they attend all their educational sessions and to attend clinics. If one is away we would ask that one of the registrars would cover their role for a few hours to accommodate. This will need to discussed and agreed at the start of the week.

Dr Lumb will be in charge of role allocations. Detailed job plans may be found below. Where possible, it is worth looking through the job plans and speaking to the outgoing SpR prior to each changeover to hit the ground running, and make the most of the opportunities on offer. It is important to stress that teamwork is key to the proper functioning of the department. For example, cross covering each other is vital to ensure workload is managed fairly.

Clinics

Each job role comes with a specific set of clinics, which can be found in the job plans below. The departmental clinic rota (crot) is accessible using Medirota.

All patients should be discussed with the covering consultant either at the end of clinic or at another mutually agreed time.

Discuss with the covering consultant but it is expected that all new patients are discussed with the consultant at the time of review and they will likely come and review the patient quickly with you.

There are many subspecialty clinics in OCDEM and, where possible, you will be given the opportunity to gain experience in each. Please confirm with the covering consultant also in case of leave, last minute changes etc. It is expected that you will cross cover eachother to accommodate this.

If you are going to be away, we would ask that you try to arrange a swap for clinics with one of your colleagues and if this is not possible then clinics may be cancelled with at least 6 weeks’ notice ( the longer
