Work Pattern

This post is non-residential. You will carry a bleep and be on-call with others on a 1:9 on call rota. As a locum you are responsible for managing your work hours but you must ensure you are safe to work. The registrars timetables are such that they are firm based and registrars will rotate as determined by the registrars lead, Miss Barbara Gerber. It is vital for patient safety that you takeover and handover jobs and patient information at the start and finish of each shift or day. The handover will normally be supervised and attended by a Consultant once a day, however it is the responsibility of all concerned to ensure that duties and jobs are handed over correctly at all times.

The day starts at 8am with Board Ward Round at the JRH or at the Churchill hospital (Blenheim ward) during Oncology blocks. This should be attended by the on-call team, all SpR’s and Consultants and any juniors who are not otherwise engaged. You should attend the board round when on training days in the JR and on Audit days.

Registrars who are timetabled to be in theatre should miss the board round and attend the ward at 7.30am to see all patients for the list on that day and ensure they are consented and ready for theatre and an 8.15 WHO.

You may have your own MOS sessions which will initially be supervised as required

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research.

The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community. We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence. These values put patients at the heart of what we do and underpin the quality healthcare we would like for ourselves or a member of our family. Watch how we set out to deliver compassionate excellence via the OUH YouTube channel.

Working time regulations

The rota is compliant with the European Working Time Regulations and has been approved by the Trust and the British Medical Association and you should under normal circumstances be able to work to this.

If on occasions you wish to stay in theatre, for example, beyond your timetable, this must be of your own will and does not count as ‘working time’

You may in very exceptional circumstances be asked to work additional hours, for example, if there is a major emergency within the Trust, but provisions should be made for you to be time compensated for this.

Clinics

When attending clinics, please arrive promptly and preferably early to review notes and enable the smooth running of the clinic. You may be asked to see a mixture of new and review patients. Patient’s notes are of great importance and are a legal document. Any entries must be dated, legible and have your signature, printed name and bleep number at the end of the entry. A clinic letter should be complete for each patient you see, training on the Trust’s digital letter writing will be provided by a secretary. It is your responsibility to ensure that any letters which you write are signed electronically as soon as possible so as to be posted out in a timely manner. This applies even if you are on leave - you can ask someone else to sign letters for you, but it is responsibility to ensure this happens.

Letters need to be clear and concise and have all the relevant information present as well as the relevant CCs.

Theatres

Clerk each patient promptly on arrival (most will have been pre-assessed, however ensure this has been done). Check carefully that the results of all investigations arranged in Outpatients are available and written in the notes. Check radiographs and scans are available and up to date.

Make sure the consent form is completed and signed. You should not consent patients for operations you are not familiar with. Check that all procedures are included and discuss with the consultant
