**Job Introduction**:
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest orchestras in the UK. Based in Glasgow, it is part of the BBC’s family of orchestras, broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3, BBC TV and online, and performs live around Scotland, the UK, at the BBC Proms each year and tours internationally. The orchestra’s Chief Conductor is Ryan Wigglesworth, and the orchestra has a strong reputation for exceptional and versatile playing, commitment to contemporary music and a willingness to experiment.

**Main Responsibilities**:
The BBC SSO is seeking an accomplished and experienced Head of Artistic Planning for this exceptional orchestra in the vibrant and busy BBC music environment.

Working closely with the BBC SSO’s Director, Chief Conductor, Senior Management Team and artistic partners, the Head of Artistic Planning is responsible for developing the BBC SSO’s artistic programme, as well as managing the production and learning team, ensuring that the orchestra’s output is of the highest quality on BBC platforms. The role works with leading musicians and international conductors, commissions world-renowned and up-and-coming composers, and manages a skilled production team.

To be successful in this role you will need the following skills and abilities:

- Artistic knowledge: to create and deliver a striking, bold and boundary-defying programme of orchestral music that excites, engages and develops live and broadcast audiences at home in Scotland, at major festivals including the BBC Proms, across the UK and overseas
- Management experience: to manage the BBC SSO’s production team (which produces content for BBC Radio, online streams and TV)
- Music Learning: to lead and oversee the BBC SSO’s approach to music learning
- Interpersonal skills: to develop strong working relationships inside the BBC SSO, the wider BBC orchestral family, BBC Proms and BBC Radio 3, as well as with conductors, visiting soloists, artist managers, recording companies and colleagues across the music industry
- Strategic approach: to contribute strategically to discussions as part of the BBC SSO’s Senior Management Team
- Commercial acumen: to develop and drive commercial income through recordings, performances, special events and tours
- Planning and organisational skills: to develop budgets and schedules for all productions, and manage rights and contractual issues
