Veterinary Clinician (Out of Hours)

**Job purpose**
To deliver an efficient and effective small animal out of hours emergency service for local first opinion practices by providing expertise and clinical activity to the Small Animal Hospital (SAH). To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates and clinical scholars. Thereby to contribute to objectives relating to national and international excellence in clinical service and teaching.

**Main Duties and Responsibilities**

**Clinical**
1. To contribute to the small animal out of hours emergency service by providing a high quality service for pet owners and liaison with external first opinion practices that will consequently maintain a clinical out of hours first opinion and referral workload necessary to support teaching and research activities.
2. To support the provision of high quality medical care to patients in the high dependency and intensive care units of the small animal hospital.
3. To maximise the opportunities available for continued personal training and development and to work closely with the appointed clinical supervisor to ensure this is achieved.
4. To contribute to the implementation and validation of clinical quality assurance measures.
5. To participate in practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to the service area at national and international level as appropriate.
6. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.
7. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the RCVS.

**Teaching**
8. To engage in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities, as directed by the Head of Small Animal Clinical Sciences in consultation with the course leaders.
9. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University's Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.

**Administration**
10. To contribute to performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with University strategy.
11. To undertake divisional/school level administration as requested by the Head of School/Division.
12. To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan.

**Knowledge/Qualifications**

**Essential**
A1. Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.

**Desirable**
B1. Full eligibility for or holds post graduate qualification in relevant discipline (internal medicine or emergency and critical care).

**Skills**

**Essential**
C1. High standard of communication skills both orally and written.
C2. Ability to work as part of a team.
C3. Ability to work independently.
C4. Self-motivated, able to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
C5. Ability to provide medical care to small animal emergency patients in the small animal hospital.
C6. Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide advice to clinicians and external veterinary surgeons.

**Desirable**
D1. High standard of presentation skills.

**Experience**

**Essential**
E1. Post-graduate clinical experience in Veterinary Surgery.

**Desirable**
F1. Post graduate clinical experience in small animal OOH emergency service.
F2. Teaching experience at undergraduate level.
F3. Record of clinical publications.

**Terms and Conditions**
Salary will be Grade 7, £38,474 - £43,155 per annum plus 30% Out of Hours Allowance plus an employer pension contribution of 21.6%. (Total salary package £58k to £65k)
