Job description

The MSc Global Affairs is an interdisciplinary programme which examines the politics, society, economics and history of the world’s non-western regions and rising powers, and their role within a changing world order. The programme offers students the opportunity to develop in-depth regional expertise in at least two of the following non-western regions or powers: Africa, Brazil, China, India, Middle East, Russia.

The King’s Global Institutes include the Menzies Australia Institute, Africa Leadership Centre, Brazil Institute, Lau China Institute, and India Institute in the School of Global Affairs (where the MSc Global Affairs is housed), and the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies and Russia Institute in the School of Politics and Economics within the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy.

The appointment is to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP), and is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. The Lectureship is a fixed-term post intended to provide a promising early-career academic with opportunities to develop as an educator and member of an academic department.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract until August 2026

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities
- To play a leading role in the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on the MSc Global Affairs.
- To co-teach the core module on the MSc Global Affairs (Introduction to Global Affairs) and the Global Institutes Research Methods module
- To offer an optional module on ‘China and the non-western World’ providing a critical understanding of policy actions such as the Belt and Road initiative, trade and export of a ‘China model’ in the Global South
- To supervise MSc Global Affairs dissertations and capstone projects
- To serve as a personal tutor, offering pastoral care and academic advice
- To develop and use innovative, effective teaching and learning techniques and resources that support the development of appropriate knowledge and skills
- To participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.
- To contribute to other events and activities within the Global Institutes, including attendance at staff meetings, co-curricular activities and, on occasion, to support Open Days/Evenings
- To pursue scholarship relating to their field of expertise and/or substantially education-focused, either individually or collaboratively with academic staff in the Global Institutes or elsewhere.
- To undertake other reasonable academic and administrative duties at the request of the institute director
- The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post._

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. PhD in a social science or relevant discipline

2. Demonstrable expertise in the wider field of Global Affairs including political economy, international political economy, development studies, or international economics; and China’s international activities

3. Excellent ability to design, deliver and assess teaching at postgraduate level, with a demonstrable commitment to inclusive student learning, supporting student welfare, and enhancing the student experience

4. An interdisciplinary mindset in education, and aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary setting, including teaching across disciplines and regions, and beyond the immediate field of expertise

5. Collegiality and willingness to work on own initiative and as part of a team in planning and delivering teaching and in the discharge of administrative duties

Desirable criteria

1. Teaching qualification relevant to Higher Education. Those without this will need to complete this in their first year in post.

2. Expertise in quantitative research methodologies

3. A developing record of high-quality scholarly publications appropriate to career stage

4. Proven experience of routine administrative roles (e.g. BA and MA admissions officers, Library Officer, etc)
