This is a rare opportunity to work and live on Brownsea Island, one of Britain's favourite nature reserves, nestled in Poole Harbour. If you have an MCA Boat Masters License, have great people and communication skills, and fancy a unique opportunity to live on an island, this role would be perfect for you. We're expanding our team, and would love for you to be a part of it.
Accommodation is provided to the postholder for the proper or better performance of his or her duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules.
**Internally you will be known as 'Boat Operator/Ranger'.**
What it's like to work here:Stunning Brownsea island is located in Poole Harbour. The island is a haven for wildlife, with an array of habitats including woodland, heathland and a lagoon. Travelling to work by water is one of the perks of the job at Brownsea Island and a free boat is available for staff. If you are enthusiastic, customer-focused and love the great outdoors, the team would love to hear from you.
What you'll be doing:A stone's throw from the Isle of Purbeck and Sandbanks, this island oasis is just a short trip across the water. You'll be operating our own island passenger ferry and landing craft, providing a safe and efficient boat service, working in partnership to deliver an island ferry service for Brownsea residents, staff and volunteers to travel to and from the island. You'll also assist with special island access such as holiday cottage guest transfers and bespoke events, and work as part of a broader team of countryside rangers delivering great service to visitors and carrying out countryside management tasks (for which additional training will be provided). You may also supervise individual and small groups of seasonal volunteer boat crew and/or countryside volunteers.
Who we're looking forThe primary part of this role will be to work as a boat skipper, therefore we'd love to hear from you if you have:
- A MCA Boatmasters Licence
- Experience in handling boats in varying and challenging sea conditions
- Deliver practical conservation work to protect and enhance the conservation status of the property
- Demonstrate a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors
- A full UK driving licence, and happy to drive our property vehicles
- Be an excellent team player
- Be able to work safely, with risk assessments and compliance with safety procedures
