Your new role
As part of Roads Development Division in Safety, Engineering and Standards, the Innovation Group provides technical leadership to ensure the Innovation and Modernisation Designated Fund delivers successful innovation for the strategic road network. This willbe done through co-ordination both internally and externally to National Highways to enable innovations to progress from initial trials through to deployment as business as usual, where appropriate.

This will mean we can respond to those elements shaping our strategic roads: climate change, technological innovation, demographic shifts and the changing behaviours of our customers. All of this achieved through extensive collaboration and influence acrossthe supply chain, international partners, academia, and government.

You will lead the group, working at national and international level - leading National Highways’ input into cross industry innovation groups and forums, ensuring we collectively benefit from collaboration. Specifically, you will own and maintain the company’sInnovation and Research strategy, guide for pilots and trials and Innovation Hub, our portal site that acts as a focal point for our innovation activities. You will help to build capability across the company through continuous improvement and building innovationcommunities, and you’ll deliver insights into the depth and breadth of our innovation activities.

You will provide technical leadership to our Innovation Assurance Panel for innovation project proposals enabling a business wide conversation to help shape successful proposals for investment decision review. You will work closely alongside the Head ofResearch to collaborate to enable knowledge gathering to inform innovation ideas and plans.

What you’ll be leading on

The development, maintenance and implementation of the Innovation & Research strategy, the Guide for Pilot and Trials, and the Innovation Governance process
Developing and maintaining strong collaborative working relationships with senior stakeholders across National Highways and externally
Developing and maintaining a strong external network and participate in industry and academic forums
Leading, motivating and developing a large and geographically dispersed group of specialists Managing and reporting on the performance of the Group and on innovation across National Highways
As a member of the Divisional senior leadership team, contributing to the development of Divisional strategy and business plans
To be successful

Proven experience of leading the development and deployment of innovative solutions, governance and provision of specialist advice on innovation ideas
Proven experience of managing and developing teams, including budget and resource management
Strong collaborator, to gain the involvement and engagement of a wide range of senior stakeholders.
Proven experience of the successful delivery of complex projects or change programmes, including the establishment of project governance in line with APMP principles
Excellent communicator, to clarify and ensure understanding of complex technical matters
