We are the Government’s advisor for the natural environment, playing a vital role in delivering the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan, an ambitious vision which brings new opportunities to protect and enhance and to achieve real outcomes for the environment.

The successful applicant will be responsible for providing geospatial information services to our ‘Natural Capital & Ecosystem Assessment’ (NCEA) Programme. NCEA is a new Defra Group evidence programme which aims to deliver high quality national and local evidence to assess the state and condition of biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural capital assets across our terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments.

Job description

This role is a predominantly desk-based role to support the ecological use and integration of Living England, a project which produces a national scale habitat map of England derived from satellite imagery, machine learning and existing habitat data records. There may be infrequent opportunities to undertake fieldwork and data collection.

The key responsibilities for **this roles** are to:

- Work under the direction of the Senior Adviser to develop Living England and Change Detection field protocols and guidance.
- Advise on species level data collection to aid assessment of habitat change.
- Lead field training for both internal and external staff (including external contractors)
- Support the Field Survey Coordinator in running the external field contracts, answering surveyor queries, and collating feedback for the technical team.
- Collate existing habitat data records from within and outside of Natural England, to update the Living England ground truth data catalogue and inform likely locations of habitat change.
- Provide ecological advice to guide the habitat classifications used for the Living England and Change Detection projects, including translating datasets from other habitat classification schemes.
- Respond to habitat classification queries from both internal and external sources.
- Liaise with stakeholders and contractors to promote use of the data and data collection.

Additional information:

- A full UK driving licence is required. Occasional travel which may include an overnight stay can be expected.

- Strong ecological knowledge of UK habitats (roughly equivalent to Field Identification Skills Certificate (FISC) level 3 or above or relevant experience)
- Good communication skills, particularly in providing training to field staff
- Experience of fieldwork and data collection across the diverse habitats of England
- Experience of targeting survey sites, organising visits and handling land access permissions
- Knowledge of UK habitat classification schemes

Desirable- Experience of using Esri Apps (e.g. Field Maps, Survey 123, Sweet, Collector)
- Basic GIS skills and familiarity of ArcGIS online
- Knowledge of relational databases (e.g. MS Access)
