London, United Kingdom Ramboll Group AS Full time

We invite you to bring your biodiversity skills and experience into play as part of our ecology team. You will be a key member of the team, working closely with the office ecology lead managing and assisting with a range of projects spanning several sectors. To succeed in this role, you must have an appropriate BSc or equivalent qualification and be a Member of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management at the appropriate grade. Possession of a protected species survey licence (ideally bats) would be an advantage along with experience of managing and undertaking ecology surveys for a range of flora/fauna.

We work to create a sustainable future and our inspiring projects and innovative solutions aim to set the standard among our peers. You will join a global company that has been growing successfully since its founding in 1945. Together, we lead and leave a positive impact on societies, companies and people around the world.

You will join our Ecosystem Solutions department

As our new Senior Ecologist, you will be part of our Environment and Health division, working on a range of projects including transport, residential and commercial development, and renewable energy projects.

Our team is small enough that you will get to know everyone and feel you have a significant role to play, big enough that there are people to bounce ideas off of including a range of different specialists such as those who are doing interesting work on nature positive/corporate BNG work.

Project work will be varied, covering a broad range of ecology services and maintaining a good balance of field and desk-based work. The role will involve managing and undertaking ecological surveys, reporting, ecological mitigation design and liaising with relevant stakeholders. This is a great opportunity to join a dynamic and expanding team delivering on key projects as well as the opportunity to further develop a variety of skills and build a successful career in the environmental consultancy sector. You will join a positive, progressive environment team delivering projects that use nature based solutions and so you will have a great opportunity to play a part in growing this team further and positively contributing to the wider business.

Your key tasks and responsibilities will be:

  • Planning and undertaking ecological surveys and producing high quality reports including habitat and species surveys (e.g. Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, Ecological Impact Assessment, ES Chapters)
  • Undertaking ecological mitigation design and delivery
  • Liaising with ecological regulators and planning authorities
  • Managing small to medium scale projects with input on large scale projects with the support of the ecology lead
  • Main point of contact with Ramboll project managers, clients, partner organisations and sub-consultants
  • Delivering technical work on complex projects
  • Fee proposal preparation and assisting with client relationship management
  • Supervision and management of more junior ecologists and sub-consultants, and input to resource planning.
  • Carrying out such additional duties as may reasonably be required in this role
  • Successful contribution to delivery of major EIA or transport infrastructure projects
  • Technical specialist for the team (dependent on species licenses)
  • Successful collaborator with other teams in Ramboll, such as Impact Assessment, Transport and Buildings
  • Key client contact and prominent member of the regional ecology team
  • Contribution to the fields of biodiversity, natural capital, climate and sustainability

Your starting point for constant growth

From the moment you join Ramboll, we will support your personal and professional development so that you grow with the company. For this role, we believe your starting point is:

  • Protected species licence(s) (bats would be advantageous), in particular experience of named ecologist on European Protected Species Mitigation Licence(s)
  • Proficient user of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook (and ideally ArcGIS or QGIS)
  • Experienced in field work and application of survey techniques in accordance with best practice guidance, in particular the ability to lead on habitat and protected species surveys
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English to a range of audiences
  • Capable of producing clear and concise written documents fit for the desired purpose
  • Highly organised and able to work efficiently and effectively to deadlines on designated tasks
  • Good knowledge of relevant environmental/ecology legislation
  • An understanding of the UK planning system in relation to development and the integration of ecology
  • Full clean UK driving licence, willingness to undertake surveys at unsociable hours (e.g. bats, newts) and flexibility to allow occasional working away from home

Personal qualities that will help you succeed in this role include: Ability to use initiative and think innovatively; Good team worker; Demonstrate attention to detail and a high level of accuracy; Self-motivated, reliable and dedicated individual; Commitment to developing a range of ecological skills; Interest in the sustainability agenda and environmental developments in the industry.
