Our East Midlands Children’s and Young Person’s Integrated Cancer Service (EMCYPICS) is a two site principle treatment centre for malignant haematology based across Nottingham and Leicester and takes approximately 140 new malignant patients each year. The post is Nottingham based, but with links via a shared MDT. Nottingham University Hospital Trust is commissioned as a Specialist Haemoglobinopathies Team (SHT) and is part of the East Midlands Sickle and Thalassemia network (EMSTN). We are also a regional referral centre for bleeding disorders. Our inpatient unit houses a teenage cancer trust area, adjacent daycare facilities with a theatre room and access to paediatric intensive care on the same corridor.

Main duties of the job

It is essential that applicants have specific training in paediatric haematology, are fully registered with the GMC with entry to the specialist register for haematology (or the expectation of award of CCT within 6 months of interview). Working for our organisation

The successful applicant will become part of a friendly and collaborative team of 7 consultant haematologists and oncologists. We have strong links with the University of Nottingham, with two team members having academic appointments. The wider paediatric team is very welcoming and sociable and includes general paediatrics, nephrology, rheumatology, metabolic, gastroenterology, intensive care and interests in cardiology. We have excellent links with paediatric surgery with dedicated theatre time for line insertions and have twice weekly dedicated bone marrow/intrathecal lists. Nottingham and the surrounding area is a hidden gem, being a beautiful yet affordable place to live with outstanding nearby schools and excellent transport links to other major cities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

**Job plan and timetable**

The following draft Job Plan reflects our best assessment of what the final plan will be, based on 10 PAs. Any consultant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post on a part-time basis; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. The service provided by paediatric haematology is across both campuses. However your primary base is Queens Medical Centre. The post holder will be expected to maintain and regularly update their practical skills in bone marrow biopsy and the administration of intrathecal cytotoxic chemotherapy as defined by NUH Trust Policy on the Administration of intrathecal Chemotherapy.

**Duties**

The appointee will be expected to fulfil the following duties with the agreed Job Plan.

Clinical

A full range of paediatric haematology emergency and elective patients are admitted to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under their care.

The appointee will be expected to share provision of cover for children under the care of the other paediatric haematologists in their absence.

The appointee will be required to advise on the management of those children with haematological problems admitted under the care of other colleagues within the unit. We presently provide service week Consultant cover for the management of those children with Cancer and benign haematological problems admitted under the care of other colleagues within the unit. The post holder will be expected to provide service week cover. The roles of the service week consultant include being the first point of contact for the junior doctors regarding inpatients, doing a board round at least once daily, reviewing any sick patients on the ward requiring senior review, prioritising admissions, and accepting referrals of patients with a suspected diagnosis of cancer. The service week consultant also provides consultant support to the day care unit which includes providing support for the registrar doing the general anaesthetic list for bone marrow aspirates/trephines and lumbar punctures and covering the list when needed. The full-time consultants provide service week cover 1 week in 6.

The appointee will be expected to provide regional advice to general paediatricians, neonatologists and other paediatric specialists and advice and guidance to local GPs.

It is expected that the post holder will become a key member of the Multidisciplinary clinical and Psycho social teams.
