The role of Head of Cataloguing, Taxonomy and Data leads and continues the transformation of the Catalogue and Taxonomy Department from its original analogue and operational focus into a digitally minded and thriving multidisciplinary team that provides intellectual control for TNA's collection regardless of medium.

This is an important leadership role at The National Archives. You will be a senior archivist, able to operate at the centre of the institution’s work. Leading a group of expert professionals, you will ensure the archive has intellectual control of its holdings.

You also have a once in a generation opportunity to transform the management of the archive’s catalogue, by delivering a linked data pan archival catalogue service.

Comfortable with the complexities of The National Archive’s catalogue, you will be able to manage sensitive issues and provide expert advice. You will pioneer the development of new archival practice for digital records. The role is also outward looking. You will be sharing your experiences with archivists around the world.

This is a full time post. However, requests for part-time working, flexible working and job share will be considered, taking into account at all times the operational needs of the Department. A combination of onsite and home working is available and applicants should be able to regularly travel to our Kew site.

**How to apply**:
Essential criteria:

- Degree and archival qualification (MA) or equivalent experience, with an excellent understanding of the challenges surrounding archival practice in a digital context.
- Strong experience as an archival leader in a digital context able to lead, motivate manage and coach multi-disciplinary teams, providing strong and caring staff management.
- A passion and enthusiasm for archival description in a digital context which translates into a desire to advocate and deliver change. You will deliver tangible benefits with long term significance and impact for The National Archives and the wider national and international archival and heritage sectors.
- Demonstrable understanding of the issues involved in designing, developing and implementing data models/ontologies/taxonomies.
- Strong organisational, administrative and change management skills; able to determine priorities and to take the accountability, managing and reporting responsibilities of leading in the public sector, in your stride.
- Proven credibility at senior level, with experience of representing an organisation to external stakeholder, academic and professional audiences, inspiring confidence in others through the demonstration of knowledge and expertise.
- Advanced research and analytical skills with an ability to act as a critical friend, analysing problems quickly and developing options for others to appraise.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the presence and confidence to represent The National Archives and influence nationally and internationally

Desirable criteria:

- Strong awareness of data sensitivity, data protection and freedom of information in an archival context
- Knowledge of metadata and semantic search technology
- Registered (RMARA) or Fellow (FARA) membership of the Archives and Records Association
