**Summary**:
- The Energetic Technologies Group (ETG), part of the Counter Terrorism and Security Division (CTS) within Dstl, provides specialist scientific capabilities and advice across the MOD and wider government. - This role is for a position within the Working Animals Applied Science (WAAS) team, which focuses on innovations at higher technology readiness levels (TRLs) and the delivery of these to customers and/or users. It works in close partnership with the Working Animals Fundamental Science (WAFS) team, which focuses on fundamental research and innovative solutions with a low TRL.**Dstl recognises the importance of diversity and inclusion as people from diverse backgrounds bring fresh ideas. This job is available on a full-time basis (37 hours per week) and is currently based at Dstl Porton Down, Salisbury. Applicants must be comfortable working around dogs and other animals. This role also involves:
- Handling of contraband material (such as narcotics, explosives and firearms) for which training and ongoing competency assessment will be provided
- Working outside in all weather conditions when conducting field work
- Occasionally working long hours when conducting field work (Flexi-time available)
- Travel (UK and international)
**Job description**:
- This is a fast-paced, customer-focussed team, with a significant amount of practical work. You will get the opportunity to work with colleagues, customers, stakeholders, health & safety and security advisors, working animal practitioners (e.g. operational dog handlers and their dogs), academia and other specialist teams with Dstl.**Your role will include**:
- Supporting practical work and field trials, with the aim of working towards leading activities in the future
- Carrying out both desk and field-based tasks
- Recording data (which will involve working with animals) on trials and using software for analysis
- Handling and processing hazardous materials (e.g. explosives, firearms, drugs), for which training will be provided
- Working away from home relatively frequently, depending upon project requirements (mostly UK but possibly international travel on occasion)
- Driving a range of different vehicles
**Responsibilities**:
- For this role, our emphasis is on having relevant experience rather than formal qualifications, although a basic understanding of biology and/or chemistry would be useful..**We are looking for someone who has**:
Good communication skills, holds a valid full UK driving licence and is competent in the use of Microsoft Office software, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
- We are also looking for suitable experience and a good understanding of at least three of the following:
- Working as part of a team
- Risk assessment and adhering to safe working practices/procedures
- Experimental field trials work
- Working in an operational environment within Defence or Security
- Working with hazardous materials
- Working with energetic materials
- Working with government organisations or the defence and security sector
- Working with dogs or other animals
- Animal behaviour and learning
- Contamination control of substances
- Transport of dangerous goods
- Other useful, but not essential experience includes an understanding of animal welfare principles and practices in the UK and animal olfactory systems.**Important Information**
- This role will require full UK security clearance and you should have resided in the UK for the past 5 years. For some roles Developed Vetting will also be required, in this case you should have resided in the UK for the past 10 years.-
