**JOB DESCRIPTION**

**JOB TITLE: DISPENSER**

The Dispenser should be capable of dispensing medication accurately and efficiently and should act as a focal point of communication regarding all things dispensing between patients, doctors and medical and non-medical colleagues. The Dispenser is responsible to the Practice Manager.

**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST**:

**MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST**

Working with dispensary colleagues the role will be responsible for:

- Checking endorsement of prescriptions and submitting to Prescription Pricing Dept (PPD) within five days of the end of each month.
- Ensuring that dispensary services undertaken outside of Carnon Downs Dispensary, i.e. supply of oxygen and colostomy items, are of high quality and accurate records are maintained to avoid breakdown of supply or waste.
- Maintaining an audit dispensary error book and report to relevant staff. Record significant events in Significant Event Book and report serious dispensing incidents to the PCT.
- Responding to alerts forwarded by the Practice Manager relevant to the dispensary e.g. CAS drug alerts, NPSA alerts.
- Keeping the necessary records for the recording of controlled drugs as required by current legislation, ensuring that batch numbers and expiry dates match those of the drug dispensed
- Performing monthly checks on all controlled drugs held in stock, record date and signature.
- Recording returned controlled drugs from patients, obtain signature from witnessing member of staff and destroy in appropriate manner.
- Regularly auditing stock use and increase or decrease stocks if necessary, checking that stock rotation is carried out and that expired stock is taken off dispensary shelves.
- Undertaking annual stock check on dispensary for end of year accounts and producing annual stock reports.
- Communicating in a professional and polite manner with all patients, medical, non-medical and attached staff with regard to queries and patient requests for medication. Dealing with all enquiries within your own knowledge base and consulting with a clinician when appropriate. Record all findings and queries answered on the patients record when appropriate.
- General administration, collation and posting of all prescription and vaccine paperwork checking for endorsements and exemptions within 5 working days at the end of each calendar month to the Prescription Pricing Department for reimbursement.
- Produce in an accurate, safe and efficient manner all medication requests working within the Standard Operating Procedures as set out by the Practice. This would include the production of dosset boxes, medication deliveries, acute and repeat medication and controlled drugs as required by current legislation.
- Guiding new members of dispensary staff and supervising reception staff in their dispensary roles
- Produce orders and manage stock control within the dispensary following all guidelines set out in the Standard Operating Procedures file. This also includes all Special orders which need due care and attention and participate in the Annual Stocktake at the end of the financial year.
- Ensure that dispensary services undertaken outside of Carnon Downs Dispensary, i.e. supply of oxygen and colostomy items, are of high quality and accurate records are maintained to avoid breakdown of supply or waste
- Ensure that any dispensing errors are reported to the Dispensary Manager and appropriate GP or Practice Manager.
