Peer Support Worker
The Safe Space in Doncaster is a People Focused Group service, commissioned by the NHS.
The aim of the Safe Space is to divert people who would be better supported elsewhere, away from Accident and Emergency (A&E) and other crisis services in Doncaster.
The service provides a peer support led, non-clinical alternative to A&E for adults in crisis, offering person-centred support in a non-clinical setting.
The post holder will provide Peer Support to visitors in acute distress, including telephone support, assisting in one to one support, support planning and liaising with local services.
The post holder will work on a zero hours contract and shifts agreed with the Safe Space Manager. The service runs from 2 pm to 2 am on the Doncaster Safe Space Plus which is working with people who have been seen, assessed and deemed appropriate for peers to work with at Safe Space during these hours.
The post requires evening, weekend, and bank holiday work and runs over 365 days a year.
The post holder will have personal experience of mental distress and substantial experience of supporting people in crisis, including working with people at risk of suicide and self-harm and supporting people from BME and LGBTQ communities.
**PURPOSE OF THE ROLE**
The role of Peer Support Worker will suit you if you enjoy working with a great team, have a passion to support people in times of crisis and want to learn and develop within your job role.
Peer Support Workers (PSWs) are people with previous experience of using mental health services who are employed, trained and supported to use those experiences to support others.
The PSWs within Doncaster Safe Space will work as part of a team providing the day-to-day delivery of the Doncaster Safe Space, including 1:1 support for service users via telephone and face-to-face.
You will work closely with partners in other agencies, including A&E, crisis and emergency teams and other voluntary sector organisations.
PSWs engage with service users, who may be in distress and build safe, trusting relationships based on non-judgemental listening and the sharing of lived experience, to inspire hope to move forward in their recovery. The focus of the PSW role is on providing an environment where individuals can discover and make use of their own strengths, and build and strengthen connections to their peers and wider communities.
PSWs receive training for the role, and supervision and management from PFG and this will include support from an experienced worker who also has lived experience of mental health problems.
