The role of surgical care practitioner (or SCP) is driven by the needs of hospitals and healthcare providers. SCPs manage the clinical care of patients but also assist with technical and operative interventions - overlapping with some of the care that's traditionally offered by doctors.

We are a team of 3 SCPs and 6 SFAs delivering quality non-medical assistance for complex procedures across many specialities - all with robust educational and practical training.

Attached JD is to reflect key responsibilities - this post is for Robotic Urology and General surgery combined.

To assist the surgical team with assessment and preparation of the pre-operative surgical patients

Directly contribute to the clinical management of pre-operative patient, including early recognition of common pre-operative complications.

Base any interventions/treatments on sufficient, accurate information with appropriate level of detail and documenting findings in patients’ notes and communicating these findings to the consultant surgeon.

Act as Robotic assistant independently under the direction of a consultant surgeon.

Assist in Robotic procedures in line with standard protocols and within own scope of practice and maintain patient safety at all times.

To act as first or second assistant to the operating surgeon during Robotic surgical investigations and procedures.

Schedule procedure activities in logical manner, allowing sufficient time for the performance of each procedure.

Consult with senior personnel where doubt exists about the procedure.

Manage actual and potential risks associated with surgical procedures.

Ensure patients have sufficient information and support following completion of procedure.

Undertake further training deemed necessary for the development of the service.

To provide specialist, technical and clinical advice to colleagues.

Identify any potential risk/harm to the patient

Involvement in creating an environment for learning, where clinical practice is developed and disseminated to all members of staff.

Develop and display effective communication throughout the peri-operative phase.

Liaise with the multidisciplinary team regarding specific requirements for theatre patients.

Ensuring all of the necessary preoperative investigations are carried out and results are available when required according to surgical procedure and patient health.

Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of care as an autonomous practitioner with specialist skills.

Provide expert clinical advice to patients, carers and health care professions.

Arranging appropriate pre-operative investigations as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Oversee the consent process following guidelines from the General Medical council (GMC) and local trust or health care provider.
Liaising with medical, theatre, ward and clerical staff.

Pre-empt specialist equipment requirements necessary for a procedure and liaise with theatre to ensure availability.

Engage and participate in the WHO safe Surgery checklist and local safety
standards for invasive procedures.

Preparing patients for their surgery in line with trust policy and protocols.

Undertake specific surgical interventions, within scope of practice, with training and supervision from the consultant surgeon which may include specific surgical interventions.

Undertake/take the lead on surgical procedures in the operating theatre as part of a multidisciplinary team acting as the lead practitioner in the absence of the consultant or surgical team.

During surgical procedures act as first or second assistant as directed by the supervising surgeon.

Support and develop continuity of patient care through their pre, intra and post-operative phases of surgical care.

Writing surgical outcome notes in line with trust policies and procedures
