To obtain capillary and venous blood samples for laboratory analysis from children attending the department.

To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team.

Responsible and accountable for delivering care, acting on own initiative and accessing supervision as required

Responsibility also includes clerical and administrative duties, stock maintenance and care, cleaning and management of equipment

Contributing to service development and promoting care in a safe environment.

Works without supervision to obtain blood samples for clinical laboratory purposes on children of all ages and in all states of health.

Transport samples safely and reliably.

Follows policies and procedures determined by others; has opportunity to comment on new or amended policies and procedures and has greater input in some areas, eg contributing to SOPs for own areas of work.

Indicates to senior/nominated staff the need to re-order items.

Demonstrates own activities to new members of staff.

Legibly record personally generated clinical information and hand-writes labels on blood samples.

Responsible for accurate input of patient data in to paper records and the IT system.

The Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of five Trusts involved in the formation of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network. The aim of the Network is to deliver a Pathology Service that provides all SYB patients and clinicians with equitable access to high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions that will ensure the best clinical outcomes for patients. A collaborative Network will also provide rewarding job and career opportunities for all staff. An Outline Business Case, which described the Target Operating Model for the future Network, has been agreed between Partner Trusts. The proposed Target Operating Model will ultimately lead to the consolidation of services across SYB. As work progresses to establish the Network, staff will be consulted about proposals that may involve them.

Assesses patient’s health, safety and wellbeing while undertaking phlebotomy, deciding whether to refer to other staff as appropriate.
- Instigate emergency procedures as required.
- Uses judgement to determine adequacy and quality of collected blood samples.
- To contribute to the training of other staff in obtaining venous and capillary samples.
- Transport samples safely, reliably and in a timely manner.
- To maintain confidentiality of information regarding children/young people/families & carers at all times.
- To deliver care, demonstrating respect, empathy and courtesy, whilst maintaining the dignity of the patient.
- Plans, prioritises and organises own day to day work tasks or activities, with supervision available as required.
- To communicate and liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, both verbally and in writing.
- Accurately record personally generated clinical observations on the patient record, using both paper and computerised systems.
- To effectively manage telephone and other enquiries.
- Advocate on behalf of the child and their family, by communicating their wishes to the relevant nursing staff.
- Help parents to make use of available services and information available in the department

Help parents, relatives and friends to communicate their needs e.g. to overcome potential language barriers and cultural differences.

Assist in maintaining a clean and appropriate working environment for clinical procedures.

Demonstrate respect for all colleagues in line with Trust values and policies.

To be aware of and adhere to the Trust’s policies and procedures.

Participate in discussions on proposed changes to policy in a team environment

On occasions participate in audit, surveys and research development as required by the Trust eg Staff survey, patient feedback.

Cope with the emotional demands of working directly with children, young people and families involved in traumatic or distressing situations e.g. unexpected Injury/illness, death, safeguarding and challenging behaviour.
