Under the direction of the settings management practitioner shall carry out a range of duties including:

- To support children on a one to one basis in the setting as directed by the settings management

**Key Duties**:
**As SENCO, it is your duty to**:

- Ensure you are familiar with the SEN Code of Practice
- Ensure your setting has an SEN policy which is appropriate and that all practitioners are aware of it
- The policy should be reviewed on an annual basis
- Overseeing the day to day operation of the groups Special Educational Needs Policy.
- Seeking support and advice from the setting's senior management team to ensure effective delivery of the setting's SEN provision
- Contribute towards implementing duties relating to relevant legislation.
- Support the practitioners who work daily with a child with additional needs and advising on issues relating to inclusive practice. This may include contributing towards relevant in-house training.
- Contributing to the continuing professional development of other staff
- Ensure that relevant background information about individual children with additional needs is collated, recorded and updated
- Monitoring the observation, identification, assessment and support of children with SEN.
- Following consultation with those involved with the child, ensure that Individual Education Plans(IEP) are in place and have been shared with parents/carers and the appropriate staff
- Ensure that evidence of progress towards IEP targets is gathered and shared at the review
- Ensuring all records on children with SEN are maintained and relevant information is passed to reception class teachers and school Inclusion Officers at transition
- Ensuring liaison with parents and other professionals in respect of children with Special educational needs.
- Offer advice to parents/carers and practitioners and know where they can go for advice and support
- Attend SEN training and feedback to other Practitioners
- Take a lead in regular review meetings, ensuring all paperwork is completed and distributed to those involved with the child.
- Ensuring liaison with parents and other professionals in respect of children with Special educational needs this will include seeking relevant funding if necessary.

- A satisfactory enhanced DBS check which confirms suitability to work with children.
- Ability to work as part of a team and work on own initiative.
- Ability to communicate effectively with parents/carers and outer agencies.
- Resourceful and able to use own initiative but also to work as part of a team
- Desirable criteria:_
- NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent
- Preferably previous experience working with young children with SEND
- Paediatric first aid qualification would be an advantage
- Awareness of additional/ special needs
- Some understanding of child development and their needs.
- Working knowledge of The Early Years Foundation Stage.
