The Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) leads the UK government’s work to enable trustworthy innovation using data and AI. We partner with organisations across the public sector, industry and academia to develop reliable approaches to data and AI governance, and tackle barriers to growing innovation.

**Job description**:
We are looking for a Head of Public Attitudes to help to ensure CDEI’s work is infused with deep engagement and understanding of public attitudes towards the use of data and AI.

You will be responsible for:

- Delivering high quality, impactful research projects that support project delivery, policy or communications.
- Analysing insights from a range of projects to build a stronger understanding of the drivers of trusted and trustworthy data use.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues from across CDEI to ensure public attitudes research and public engagement is scoped to support project goals.
- Building the awareness of CDEI’s public attitudes capabilities within government, academia, industry and civil society.
- Managing a small research team (1 direct report at present).

You will sit within the External Affairs and Insight team, reporting to the Head of External Affairs and Insight. The team also includes the CDEI’s communications and engagement.

**Person specification**:
If you are a member of the GSR profession, your membership will be verified. If you are not a member of the GSR profession, you will need to fulfil the entry requirement below:

- Hold an undergraduate at minimum of 2:1, or a 2:2 with an additional postgraduate degree. The degree must include a substantial social research methods training (comprising of around one third of modules taken on the course) including quantitative research methods and at least three of the following:

- systematic/ literature reviews;
- qualitative methods;
- interpretation of data and presentation of results;

**Essential skills**
- Proven track record of designing and delivering high quality public attitudes or public engagement research projects.
- Comfortable working with a range of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.
- Focused on impact: able to effectively prioritise projects and ensure that research in scoped and delivered in a way that helps find solutions to challenges and evidence gaps.
- Good project management skills, with a proven ability to run multiple projects from concept to delivery.
- Comfortable liaising with senior stakeholders and building effective partnerships, both within a matrix structure at CDEI and with partners across the public sector.
- Interest in data and AI - including data / AI governance and the way their use impacts upon society and the economy.

**Desirable skills**
- Experience of conducting and evaluating statistical analysis (e.g. data wrangling, regression analysis, data visualisation) using software such as SPSS and Excel.
- Experience of computational social science using R and / or Python and more advanced statistical methods, e.g. conjoint analysis, cluster analysis, topic modelling, and running randomised controlled trials.
- Experience of qualitative research or mixed methods research, including research design, data collection (interviewing, focus groups) and data analysis.
