An opportunity has arisen for an SLT to join the Nottingham Children’s Hospital SLT service (Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - NUH) on a progression post.
This post sits within a growing SLT service to the Nottingham Children’s Hospital, working alongside the Clinical Specialist SLT for acute paediatrics and the Neonate SLT service lead. The post sits in a friendly, dedicated, and ambitious MDT who are keen to welcome and support an SLT. There is strong support and supervision from the Long Term Ventilation MDT and from the large SLT service for adults and paediatrics across NUH, with opportunities for mutual mentoring and support.
This post is permanent and full-time, although part-time and flexible working would be considered
Main duties of the job
The Paediatric LTV service is a multi-disciplinary service with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals. This an established and growing specialist LTV service for children who require breathing support across the region including Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Lincolnshire. The post will cover inpatients with LTV needs at Nottingham Children’s Hospital (Queens Medical Centre - QMC) as their tertiary centre. The post also provides community support based from QMC, attending patient homes and other locations, for example schools, across Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire linking with, and where necessary, supporting community and other colleagues.
The post holder will assess and advise on the eating, drinking and communication needs of children, young people, and their families with LTV and associated conditions. Applicants will work with professionals and agencies in tertiary, primary and secondary care to ensure they are updated and upskilled regarding the care of children receiving LTV around the eating, drinking, swallowing and communication needs. They will be able to work autonomously across acute and community settings providing specialist LTV care and training to a variety of children and young people with differing and complex LTV needs, their families/carers, and staff.

A key part of the ethos of this team is to offer training, guidance and support to all its team members.
In addition to working within this exciting multi-disciplinary team there is a Band 8a SLT for the Neonatal Unit, a Clinical Specialist SLT post for the broader acute paediatric service, and the post holder will work closely with these and the operational lead. The post holder will be involved in the future development of the paediatric SLT service structure, influencing the strategy of how we deliver these services, and influencing the development of the band 7 and band 6 SLTs in the service. The development of paediatric SLT is a key part of the AHP strategy set by the Chief AHP/Clinical Director for Therapies and Rehabilitation. The paediatric SLTs are now operationally managed by an SLT and benefit from the support available in the Therapies and Rehabilitation directorate around workforce development, training, and developing clinical roles and advanced practice.

To provide advanced SLT care and clinical leadership for Speech and Language Therapy to children and young people and their families with Long-Term Ventilation (LTV) needs. This role spans the Long-Term Ventilation service provided at Nottingham Children’s Hospital and provides outreach support across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Staffordshire. The Speech & Language Therapist is a key role within the LTV team which is made up of Consultants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Play Specialist and Psychologists.
To offer assessment and intervention of communication, eating, drinking and swallowing needs of children and young people (CYP) presenting with Long-Term Ventilation needs, including invasive (tracheostomy) and non-invasive ventilation needs.
