**Essex County Council (ECC) are delighted to be supporting Braintree Council to recruit for **Members of their Independent Remuneration Panel.***

**The Opportunity**:
We are looking to appoint Members to the Braintree District Council Independent Remuneration Panel.

The panel carries out an important function for both the Council, and for the whole District. Its core role is to ensure that the allowances payable to Councillors of the District Council represent a fair and reasonable recognition of the commitment and responsibility that they hold whilst ensuring that public funds are being used appropriately.

The appointment of Members of the Panel will be for a 4-year term, with the possibility of extending for a second term. The appointment will consist of one in-depth review of the Members Allowance Scheme, followed in subsequent years by a light touch annual review.

Each Panel Member will receive an annual payment of £600 in the first year for a full review, followed by an annual payment of £200 in subsequent years for a light touch annual review.

When undertaking a full review in year 1 it is expected that the Panel will need to be available for 2 full days. When conducting an annual review in subsequent years, Panel members will need to be available for half a day for each review, however additional time may be required.***

**The Role**:
The Panel recommends how the Member Allowances Scheme should work, reflecting on the experience that both existing Councillors and Officers can provide. The Panel also looks at comparisons of allowances in other Councils to give an independent input.

Panel Members will work with the Head of Governance to maintain reviews of the Council’s Members’ Allowances Scheme, receive evidence and make recommendations to the Council on any proposed changes to that Scheme.***
