Trauma-responsive Specialist Children's Support

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom The Belay Foundation Full time

The Belay Foundation places Specialist Support Workers in the homes of families whose children have previously been in local authority care. This position is supported by Arc Adoption.

This great role, for five hours a week, is to offer trauma-responsive support to three young children, spending time with them all together and individually, and to generally support the children and their family. The role will involve working early evenings and/or weekends, although the precise details can be discussed to fit around other commitments.

Leon* (7), is a football-obsessed animal-lover with aspirations to identify as a gamer as well as enjoying being read to and trying foods from around the world; Stanley* (5) will seek any quiet spot to build things or create spectacular obstacle courses, loves sensory play, gymnastics and dancing and is also somewhat intrigued by different foods; Kit* (3) is a gentle wonder who loves nothing more than helping at home cleaning, doing odd jobs, or brushing his dolls’ hair; all three boys also love jumping around, climbing, running, kicking balls and generally burning as much energy as possible off at the park.

Leon, Stanley and Kit live with the impact of trauma from their earliest years: the sibling dynamic is a challenge, they struggle to manage their emotions or play together and experience varying sensory challenges, and can all present as emotionally younger than their chronological ages.

The role is to support the family by spending time with the children - with the parents, individually or in pairs, at least at the beginning - gradually building trusting relationships with all three boys. This role will be extremely rewarding and offer a valuable insight into working directly with younger children with complex developmental needs using an attachment model of care. You will have experience of working with children, an interest and preferably experience in the developmental impacts of attachment and trauma, and a willingness to learn and invest in the family. You will need to be mature, emotionally grounded, curious, patient and reflective, and confident that in time you will be comfortable being in sole charge of more than one child at a time both out and at home.

To support you The Belay Foundation will offer training in attachment and trauma, safeguarding, professional boundaries and regulating techniques as well as other any other preparation that will help you in the role. You will also receive ongoing support, peer supervision and clinical supervision.
